Actually I would be fine with it.

This is actually a good idea and would save the UK and our overstretched armed forces a job.

Realistically, Northern Ireland with no border to Ireland doesn't really work since Brexit.  I'm sure Boris and Farage claimed it would - much like the £348m a day we'd save, and the gullible believed that - but subsequently it's been a non stop thorn in the backside.

Whether the whole island becomes part of the UK (unlikely), or NI becomes part of Ireland and the EU (more likely), a united* Ireland is ultimately inevitable.


*United as in one country, Ireland will never been united culturally.

Despite all the crap in the media, there is still a decent majority in Northern Ireland in favour of remaining in the UK.
There cant possibly be a reunification for at least another 30 years without it resulting in an all out civil war.
Everyone in Northern Ireland who is a loyalist (wishes to remain part of the UK)  knows at least a couple of people who were murdered or maimed by the IRA / INLA and their offshoots.
While those people are still alive, they wont sit back and allow the country to be handed over to a completely hostile state.
Most mainland Politicians are aware of this, and although many of them would loved to have got rid of N.I. years ago, they know that in the short to medium term , its a non starter.
I  hope it never happens, but if it does, I hope its not in my lifetime as to me, it would be an utter tragedy.

Boris undoubtedly made a mess of it when he negotiated his Brexit deal, which is now the cause of the problems there. Although to be fair, Treasonous May left him a very poor hand to play with.
Its almost never mentioned, but his Brexit deal with Varadkar actually rendered the Good Friday agreement, null and void.

I'd loved to have been a fly on the wall when Boris met Varadkar at some stately home in Cheshire.  He went in saying there may have to be some checks on the border with the Republic, and came out saying that they'd done a fantastic deal to put the border down the Irish Sea!     

As to a united Ireland, the left wing commentariat seems to assume that the people of the Republic of Ireland are keen on it, but every Irish person I've ever spoke to about it, don't want it. I'm sure the Republic's politicians want to do it, especially in their term so they can go down in history, but they have to get it past the people in a referendum first.
