In this world, at this moment in time, the first question should be "Will I, or anyone else my age, get to be 57?" Admittedly, it's always best to plan for it, but I wouldn't deprive myself too much.  :)

The male life expectancy at age 42 is 84 years according to the ONS. You have an 88% chance of making it to 68 (state pension age), and a 39% chance of making it to 90.

Failing to plan is planning to fail. Obviously there is a chance Putin and/or Trump will blow the world up tomorrow, but you can't plan for random events. Sure, spend some of it whilst you are still fit and able to enjoy things, but leave enough for a comfortable retirement.

Supposed experts  tell us if we follow a healthy lifestyle we may be blessed with an additional 10 years meaning you drop off the perch at 90 instead of 80 .....or 80 instead of 70.

But who wants those years?..... if they told us follow a healthy lifestyle and you can live the years from 20 to 30 over again I could be tempted, but living an additional 10 years where you are dribbling into your cardigan and have bits of carrot stuck to your chin while looking blankly out of the window than thanks, but no thanks. :)

I feel we should defer this question to STEMO for an answer given he has experience of such a scenario

I don't think life expectancy is a metric I would consider in these times  ;D

You need to get up from your computer chair and have a run up and down the stairs. Get your blood circulating and free your joints up  ;D
