Newbie seeking advice on used Omega...
« on: 26 September 2008, 15:29:58 »

Hello all,

Last week I bought a 2001 2.2 CD Saloon Omega and hopefully I didn't buy a lemon!  It has only 46k miles on the clock, looks immaculate and I bought from a trust-worthy dealer.  The down-side is that the cars got no service history and no warranty although it's MOT'd until next August.

What do you recommend I do to give me peace of mind the cars OK?  I've been reading that the cambelt should be replaced but differing reports about the milage.  Would you recommend a complete service?  If so, what sort of price can I expect to pay?

To be honest, it wasn't on the radar when I first started looking but I'm impressed so far and want to look after the car.

thanks in advance!

Nice to see you made it onto this section.

There are many Omega experts on this site, but I certainly can say that if you have bought a miggy without a service history it is best to assume a full major service, with ALL filters replaced, and a new cam belt is required for peace of mind if nothing else.

Cam belts must be replaced before each 40 thousand miles, or every 4 years.  Failure to change this could result in the destruction of your engine! :'( :'(  So it is very worth replacing. :y :y :y

In terms of cost Vx dealers around me charge £75 per hour plus parts, so I know you will not get change out of £500 (based on recent quote from Dover Vx Dealer) for a major service and cam belt change if you let them do it :o :o :o :o :'( :'( :'(.  Best to do it yourself if you can! ;)

The aforementioned experts will now no doubt add far more detailed advice Blackie. ;D :y :y :y

I would change the cam belt and water pump, all the fluids (especially coolant), filters, etc. and also check the breather system is clear if the history is unknown.

As said, cam belt needs doing every 40k/4 years and the tensioners and, on the 2.2, water pump should be included in the change.

Might be worth changing the brake fluid if it looks dark in the reservoir, and checking the condition of the pads and disks, and operation of the handbrake.

Check the drain holes below the scuttle panel on the passenger side are clear, as this can fill with water and leak into the interior, and check the pollen filter condition while you're there.

I wouldn't say much more needs urgent attention at that mileage. Gearbox and diff oil should be checked and topped up and if the gearbox is automatic it's well worth changing the transmission fluid once it's got a few more miles under its' belt at say 60-80k IMHO.

Can't offer further advice other than Kevin Wood's comprehensive suggestions of cambelt kit, waterpump, do antifreeze whilst there.  A couple of short oil changes won't harm, and clean throttle body and breathers as per AA's guide in Maintenence Guides :)

Blackie . would you care to tell us all how much you paid for your car. Mine is also 2001 and it may give some idea of Omega prices.
With such low mileage you should have a hopefully trouble free car for many years to come. :y :y

Thanks everyone for the quick response!  I don't have the tools or know-how for all that so will take the hit on the full service with a new cambelt I think... had an old beemer before that threw a belt and it cost me a couple of grand for an engine rebuild!  The price was good I think - £1700 (trade sale price from dealer), so alls fair I guess.

Thanks again! :y

Prices vary considerably between UK and Ireland.  Even vary a fair bit between England and Scotland...
