I've seen these emails a lot of times but they do seem to be getting more convincing.  The link on this one was www.paypal.com/....  rather than stating with an IP address.

I was talking to someone the other day who got scammed good and proper, hence this post.

Kate, the important thing to remember is that no organisation which holds sensitive information about you will start a message with "Dear Member".

They will ALWAYS use a real name or log-in name, known only to that organisation.  :y

Yes but the whole point of this thread was that not everyone knows that.

This is a thing that bugs me. Recent discussion regarding the amount of info gathered by ISP's looks quite strong. SO WHY CAN'T THEY TRACK THE CROOKS PUTTING THIS CR*P OUT ON THE NET ?. This is obviously fraud etc, so why don't they stop it?.

I know some OAP's, etc who might benefit from internet access, being able to keep in touch with relatives. but I don't want to give them PC's. How do I tell them to ignore all emails re their bank, or the garbage re sex aids, or fake watches ?.

Until we stop all people misusing the net, it will remain a haven for crooks and fraudsters. :'( :'( :'( :'(

Simple answer to these old phishing tricks - never click on email links.  Or if you must, hover over link, and email client should give you the real URL (though this can be made to look convincing), but this is not foolproof.

As a further warning to others never to click on a link, I had an absolute cracker of an email supposedly from Paypal - everything, and I mean everything, looked genuine.  I never click on Paypal links, so logged on manually, and it appears the email was spoof.  Paypal confirmed it was spoof.  But they could answer my questions on how the spammer got my Paypal real name, and how it came from Paypal's own mail servers (I run my own mail server so have those logs).
