FFS - rather government (and their departments)
« on: 29 September 2008, 14:49:09 »

Apparently, OFCOM are looking at licencing computers in similar way to TVs, or adding additional tax on there purchase, above and beyond the current VAT.

Also being considered, is an extra tax on internet connectivity and consumables, again above and beyond the current 17.5% VAT we already pay.

This may go beyond computers - iPods have also been muted about, so probably cover a range of hitech devices, esp those capable of music/video playback.

This is to, alledgedly, pay for more public service broadcasting.  Err, so why do I pay nearly £150 per year for a licence for the TV? Thought that was for public service broadcasting?

I sure as hell don't want to pay for more crap like X-Factor and Knobenders.

Scrap the BBC as publically funded, its turned to chav TV anyway  >:(.  Not that the government can, as its plays a pivotal role in the governments Ban Drinking campaign  >:(

What about computers assembled from parts?

I detest Ofcon at the best of times. They do NOTHING for us and suck up to the broadcasters.

They are denying us more spectrum for HDTV, they let ITV off over its gambling channel.

Useless tossers who are on my shit list >:(

I suspect they will get around that loophole somehow - the large computer manufacturers would make them close it.

And don't doubt for a minute the influence that the largest computer company in the world has over most UK government deprtments...

Is that the same company who worked for the Germans in the late 1930s?

Anyway we need a general election now - the current lot are a liability

thats an ITV show - paid for by ads - ironically it's that kind of garbage we would have wall to wall if the Beeb didn't have a public service remit due to the licence fee  :y

no other channel has the money to create a "Blue Planet" or a "Life on Earth" - you'd never have an essentially independent News platform, programmes like Top Gear wouldn't exist as no car maker would subject themselves to ridicule whilst paying for the ads........sorry - the Beeb is worth EVERY penny - I don't think we realise how lucky we are in this country to have it.

As for the BBC News being independent...  ...i think not.

As for wall to wall trash-factor, how hard are they pushing trash like Strictly Come Dancing?

there is a lot of stuff on the Beeb that I don't watch - thats not the Beebs job - no one makes programmes that EVERYONE likes - i've never seen an episode of eastenders but i know 10million people love it - so there is a place for it - same as theres a place for the science stuff that 3 people and a dog watch :)
and it has tended to go for the ratings in the last few years as opposed to quality programmes - having said that it is independent and willing to share its mistakes - more or less reports evenly and dispassionately - ever been to italy? thats what state sanctioned news is like - you can't criticise the government or any of the cabinets interests, you cant criticise the church either!!?? (always odd)
i'll have the beeb - thanks - don't mind paying for indepence  :y

Trouble is, I reckon the News and Current Affairs depts of BBC are nothing more than an extension to the Government's (whichever one in power) proporgander machine.

What's say we all do a credit check on the banks and an audit on the government. It appears to me asthough the kids have been left in charge of the sweet shops for too long no matter how big their bowler hats are or what colour tee shirt they wear. Tax every form of success and kill it/us that's this wonderfull country and to pay for what? Why don't we have a windfall tax rebate because of all the money the treasury made when petrol prices flew through the roof (and we know how much HMRC do n't make from that :y). They could n't have seen it comming (could they?). ;)

i've never seen a government so pilloried by the media (with the exception of Major's last few days) so an unbiased stance appears to be pro-government when everyone else is on a witch hunt! ;)

theres too much good radio, great website and accasional broadcasting brilliance to chuck it away for another ITV  :-/

Just read on another forum I frequent that Ofcom are considering restructuring the way that marine vhf licences are provided. the upshot of this if it goes through unamended is it will cost the RNLI £250,000 per year for licences >:(. Not only will it effect the RNLI but also smaller independent marine rescue services, and mountain rescue who will have  to find several thousand pounds each a year to cover the additional charge. Many of these services find finances tight as it is without this additional burden being placed on them.

Is there an extra tax on TV's?

You already have to have a TV license to watch the little video clips on the BBC, ITV et all news websites!  How the he|| can they link taxing computers to public service broadcasting?

There is no tracability to UK tax money.  It all just goes into one big black hole.  Automotive related taxes are not linked to transportation projects.  This is going away from relevancy and transparency in public funding, not towards improving it.

Trains may have been invented here, but public transport is a foreign concept!
