Just setting up the Omega so I can buy and tow a caravan.

Got a good idea on all the electrics and towbar fitting but could someone advise me on mirrors.

I believe I need mirror extensions to tow a caravan, but what's good on an Omega and what's bad......

You will need mirrors, unless you have a very narrow caravan! I'll have to check but I think mine are called Rock Steady Mirrors and are very good.

I haven't bought the 'van yet. First step is getting the tow bar sorted.....

Next step is mirrors etc.

If I buy a caravan off Ebay etc. I suspect I'll need to pick it up

hi jason.it is a legal requirement to fit extending mirrors when towing a caravan.most mirrors will fit,but the best i think are the clamp on ones.they can be bought on ebay.the law states you must have one on the drivers side,but it is safer to fit both,imo

I've used these before now and work very well but never fitted the Cav so I got me a set of these. HTH

I use a pair of Milenco Universal Towing mirrors they fit the Omegas fine clamp on frame of mirror at top then a rubber strap comes over back of mirror & hooks on see link  might give you an idea..

Thanks - that's a stack load of useful info.

Not sure about wing mounted mirrors - I'd be worried they'd do something nasty to the wing if I clipped one.

The Stinger style mirror in the above link fit ok on my Facelift mirrors.

Tip ...once you have got them adjusted and happy with the fitting mark them L & R then there is no need to readjust everytime you fit them.

They've never marked the cav's paint, very stable mirrors too, they don't even vibrate when reversing against the vans brakes. Always been aware of them so never clipped one

Not strictly true... It is a legal requirement to have clear vision down the side of the towed trailer. Also, if fitting extensions you must be able to adjust the driver's side one from the driving seat, so wing mounted are now illegal!

As stated, only required for drivers side but much easier if you get a pair, preferably with a convex one for the N/S as this gives better vision  of the 'van when turning left

The guidelines for mirrors state 'you must be able to see clearly down both sides of the caravan and 4m either side,at a distance of 20m behind the caravan',so unless your caravan is narrower than your car mirrors should be used.

I tried them on my preface lift, I found them to be useless!  
I now use a pair of Milenco mirrors - a convex on the near side & I can actually tell what is beside/behind me , rather than a fuzzy blurred something!   They also allow movement of the door mirrors, without fouling, which I tend to tip down a little on each side so I can see the front corners of the van. Hand on narrow lanes to get as far to the left without hitting the verge/wall on your left.
About £35/40 for the pair -  IIRC

Milenco aero's ... not the cheapest but probably the best.

Good size mirrors, easy to attach and remove, but most important of all .. no vibration

 

and if you have electric seats/mirrors system .. a little trick .. set position 3 to be normal seat but car mirrors angled down .. makes reversing a doddle, and you just press a single button to put them down, then the other button to put them back to normal
