Same really. Not a huge post count myself, wasn't here from the outset but certainly from the early days relatively speaking.
Also this way new or newer members can watch their membership time grow as well as building their post counts. :y

M_M and A_MV6 - you both have very respectable postcounts - 3000+ on any internet forum is a huge number :y

TBH .. seniority/number of posts proves very little ... I've been around a year, and have quite a few posts (OK I talk too much) .. but I'm no expert . I have a good memory and can regurgitate other peoples ideas, and I know how to use a search engine so can provide links quickly ... but that does not say I know what I'm on about !!

Someone could join tomorrow who is an ex-service manager with 20 years experience of working on cars hands-on... should my opinion carry more weight than their's simple due to "time on site" ?? I think not.

I know who I listen too from reading and watching, some have been around  longer then me .. some haven't ...

It's not broken .. does it need fixing ???

Just my thoughts .. nowt else .. :)

I don't know........without wanting to sound "elite-ist", I think lenght of membership counts for more than number of post counts. It's easy enough to rack up a high number of post counts simply by welcoming new members or posting endless jokes etc (nothing wrong with that as I do the same quite often) but I think length of membership counts for a bit more in terms of loyalty to the forum. :-/

When I've joined new forum's and made my first post, when someone answers you that has been a member for a few years, you just get a feeling that that person is a loyal forum member that is very genuine.

I'll shut up now and get my coat! ::)

But whats the point of joining a forum 2 years ago and doing only 25 posts.

I am a member of lots of forums and this is the only one I visit, but you cant judge me by the age of membership.

Maybe I might be more respected by not telling anymore jokes and not bothering to say hello to aynyone.

Mind you I am actually one of a hanfull that doesnt give a monkeys abou the size of my post count/

Loyalty = Post count V Length of membership.

Sadly I disagree.  I think we are all equals as regular visitors to the forum.  Lets face it.  We can all make a difference to out post counts just by joining in.  Sadly we cant change when we joined.

Very true Skruntie - sorry, I wasn't meaning to have a pop. :-[ As I said I've probably raised my post count by doing the very same things, and no, I don't see post counts as being a major issue. I just thought that it would be nice to know how long people have been members. :-/

Think I got carried away with my last post!! ::)

**edit**

PS forgot to mention..........don't stop the jokes, I quite enjoy 'em :y

I strongly agree Entwood and HC! :y :y :y :y :y

In the company I worked for for 28 years were managers who had been with the business for 40+ years, but it was not length of service that counted, it was the true contribution to the bottom line profit of the Company.

Indeed when I was a young field manager I had to sack / pursuade resignations from a number of managers who had been around donkeys of years, but they failed to produce the results required.  There experience and knowledge equalled just 1 year x (ie) 40 years instead of 40 years of continual improvement and development.

Put simply, if somebody "sits back" in any organisation and only contributes ocassionally over years, they cannot be considered of greater worth than somebody who contributes high levels of good input of a shorter time scale.

As we often stated in our (retail)  business, even when I had achieved 25 years of successful management, length of service did not count, it was the contribution being made currently that did! 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

Once the new software is deployed and stable, we might put this one to a vote.

I guess join date is similar to postcount in a lot of respects.  But I am concious not to disadvantage (actually or perceptionally) recently joined members - they are the ones we need to encourage to join in...

I've been undecided on this one for a while....
But am leaning towards good idea.

1st of all, no offence is meant by what follows...

It could show the type of member...

High post count, recent join date = waffler
Low post count , recent join date = newbie

High post count, long join date = Long term contributer
Low post count, long join date = Learner, not really contributer, but always knows where they can come for help

Obviously the middle ground would still be very ambiguous
And as we well know, post count does not always mean knowledge.

I am not saying anyone is better than anyone else, and these are obviously not concrete as to people helpfulness, the forum needs the full mix of 'types' to be successful.

Now if we could show post count per section, now that would be revealing  ;D

I guess it depends on software and config, but a lot seem to have "most active in section" on the profile summary. Not that good for us though, nearly all the more senior members would be "most active in... General Chat"  :)

We shouldn't lose sight of the purposes of this forum when discussing contribution value. Its primary purpose is helping out with technical and moral support. But its primary function is providing a sense of community and a good place to 'hang out'.

As such, for me anyway, the general chatting that goes on is as valuable as the technical support.

I have no objection to 'member since'. CableHell (for instance) shows join date and member number.
