Genuine GM Cam belt kit - Can it be faulty???
« on: 04 October 2008, 19:53:06 »

At the York meet, I changed the cam belt on the car.

As some of you are aware, I had major issues getting the GM cam belt kit to fit.

After a few hours of adjusting tensioners and other bits, I got the timing spot on, only problem was every tensioner / idle pulleys were at their max limits, and the belt was still slack.

Markey Mark came down on the Sunday, and he couldn't get the belt tight either. So I bought Will's belt kit from him (Gates powergrip kit), and that went on a treat.

On Sunday, we all said that the new GM belt looked longer than my old one  :-/

However, today I have tried to line it up again with my old belt, and it looks the same to me :-?

Was it us doing something wrong? I VERY VERY VERY much doubt that, as Mark does these belts in his sleep!  ;D And the Gates kit went on straight away with no problems.

So, what do I do with the new GM belt kit? :-/

Where do I stand taking the belt kit back to Vx? Noticed that receipt says 'non-refundable'  :(

Just have a feeling that there could be problems taking it back, and them saying ‘no way can the kit be faulty’.  :-[

I have wondered about that too. If there was an ajustment to be made on each of the tensioners & eccentrics I think we made it several times over.
I'm not sure where you stand with regard to taking it back. How well do you know your parts dept?  ::)
The fact that the pattern Gates kit fitted first time must tell us something .... what that is, I aint to sure. :-/  :-/
You can only ask. ;)

Anything can be faulty, no matter what it is. Brand new or second hand.

I was a friend of a friend that got the kit  :-/ So thinking about it, would he have to take it back?

I’m totally lost with this, I just don’t understand it. The only thing I can think is either A) The belts wrong or B) The Pulleys are wrong.

I Just don’t see how us two couldn't get it to line up! Even a few hrs later after removing the cam lock on the first bank, and manually rotating the cams round (Which you shouldn't do anyway), we got the timing correct, but couldn't get it taut...

Then when mark had a go, he had EXACTLY the same problems.... :-?

New belt just fell into place almost  ;D

Totally agree. But there was nothing obviously different between the kit Ian had and the kit Willyboy had & the original kit that came off Ian's car.  :-/  :-/  :-/

Take it back and get a refund as the item was not fit for purpose.

Should be no quibble.

Both of you go in to return it Ian as he bought it & you (we) found it unfit for it's purpose. despite the no refund notice on the ticket there's still the trades descriptions act.
Basically it did'nt do what it said on the tin. :(

the no refund bit is if you decide you don't want it after all (you wouldn't want one that someone had returned , would you..), not in the case that it is faulty, as here apparently.

Obvious question - it was for the right engine number I assume?

Take it back explain the situation, does the non return situation not apply to the running of the belt? as then no one could say how long it was on. If necessary contact Vauxhall I've always found them very helpfull. The fact that so many people could not get it to work, could it have been stretched in manufacture?

Not fit for purpose - Sale of Goods Act - seller legally must replace or refund.
