Let There Be No Light
« on: 14 October 2008, 11:13:50 »

Have you heard the latest from some local councils. Turning off street lights in order to meet Co2 emissions & also to save hundreds of thounsands a year :o
I see Powys have already done so & others are thinking taking up the same stance.
One guy had his car stolen within days of the blackout & you have to admit, it will create a haven for who ever to do what ever. Ok, cars get stolen every day & that's nothing new, but i bet the crime figures will rise considerably if this arse of an idea goes nationwide.

What are your thoughts? I know what mine are

I think after a certain time of night turning every other one off would be a good idea.....and possibly the same on major intersections of motorway etc.

They could also do such things as fit effective light refelectors etc to ensure what light the do put out heads downwards rather than all over the place!

I hope this means a cut in light pollution, the night sky in Worcestershire is a joke compared to that in Cornwall

Yes Mark I have to agree. The motorways have light sections & for what :-/ Don't turn a place into darkness, make better use of what's there. The industrial estate just across from me is light up like Blackpool & when i'd take the dog for walk late at night, i'd be the only one.
Uhm, i wonder if Blackpool & the like will do the same :-/ I think not, money always comes before everything else.

They should also think about turning traffic lights off on roundabouts say between the hours of 19.00 and 6.00.

They didn't bother with streetlights when they built our street anyway. >:(

I believe street lighting is only really important where pedestrians and traffic mix. I.e. town centres and housing estates, and even then it sdoesn't have to be all night. There are so few pedestrians at 3 o clock in the morning that they might as well be turned off at midnight. Cars have headlights so there's no point in lighting huge stretches of dual carriageway and motorway.

Commercial sites seem to be the most wasteful users of unnecessary lighting though.

We have the opposite issue......

The council have just replace the streetlights at the back of our house, they have changed them from the yellow to white lights......

We dont need lights in aout garden, bedroom, landing or living room....they are like bloody searchlights!!! its saving me a fortune in lighting bills

Ill get some pics tonight so you can see.....

now theres something i totally agree with ,the amount of time i come up to a roundabout or a set of lights only to have turn red is down right frustrating as well as a waste of fuel  >:( >:(, why cant we have a system like on continent where they just flash orange , so if you have right of way you still carry on regardless.  But some HSE numpty would disagree with saying it would cause accidents

do you know how manyy accidents that could cause!!!!   ;D ;D

People have forgotten what a roundabout is now that traffic lights are on them.
We have a huge roundabout in plymouth, marsh mills, each exit is serviced by a set of lights, frequently they fail and the whole area grinds to a halt because people have forgotten that it is a roundabout and so when the lights were not there we all just used to get on it and drive round......
I have seem youngsters stop with a bemused look on their face, they literally don't know what to do  ::)

Marsh Mills is a horrible roundabout  ::). I used to drive around that when the A38(?) used to finish there, & not be on a fly-over over the top ....... many many years ago now.  ;)  ;)

I could think of a few roundabout around here that could do with bombing their traffic lights turning off. Town centre traffic lights are another. How many here work shifts & are the only bu66ers about at 5:00 in the morning & have to sit & wait for sets of lights to go throughtheir entire sequence bore you get a green light .... only to be stopped at another bl00dy light 200 yds down the road.

I'm not sure about turning all the street light off at certain times. A couple of years back, we had a power failer around here that took out quite a sizable area for 4 or 5 hours. You forget how dark the night is when you live in the city/big town.  :-?

We boader powys and the Mrs family live there. Their council is so much better than our in hereford. Their council tax is also way way cheaper! Powys seem to be doing ok... Good on them.... if it keeps council tax down then bring it on I say. ;)
