Computer Help - Motherboard Power
« on: 17 October 2008, 17:30:09 »

Got my self a Newish Motherboard (long story) in the process I have bought a couple of branded PSU unit's, one being a thermaltake and the other being an Xilence.

Have come to play/test the motherboard and with it having a quadcore I bought a new HD fan setup for the CPU.

Fitted my Geforce card in allthough the board is optimised for the new ATI Cards.  Fitted the 24 pin main power plug to the board.

Come to fit the 4 pin connector near the processor and the new power supplis now only have the 6 pin headers anong with the 8 pin header plugs.

Am I correct in thinking this 4 pin socket is just extra power to the board to help support it performance, or is it an eassential socket that has to be powered up.

I cant get a picture at the moment, but I think that is becuase I have not used the correct 21 pin to 15  pin vga convertor.

Main concern at this point is the 4 pin extra power convertor.  Just need to clarify it's use.

TIA.   :y

Looks like I may need something like this to get me going or find a PSU with 20/24 and 4 Pin ATX connections.

Sorry Skruntie but you might have to resort to a bad habit on this one - Please read the manual.

Since it's a Newish board, you should be able to download it from - newish.com/support

Most boards that have the 4 pin 12v connector wont boot without it being connected! :-/

the extra 4pin plug is old hat now, using the extended 24pin atx instead.

As there is a 24 pin main socet fully powered does that mean the 4 pin could be left redundant then?    or at least use the board till I can get a convertor.

A lot of modern PSU's the 8 pin "splits" into 2 *4 pin supplies, just by "snapping" apart ...  for those that don't have the 8 pin socket .. have a close look ... I've surprised a few folk who don't realise .....  :)

The PSU I am using has a 6 way with an extra 2 by it's side.  But looked to split it, sadly it wont. :-/

Found an 8 pin plug on the same PSU after having a better look (was a bit zonked out on pain killers yesterday) :'(

Checked all the plugs before I split the 2 x 4 Pin (8 Pin) so looking good.

Thankyou for all your help.  :y :y :y :y

Actually thinking back, it's very rare they bring out computer goodies with out some degree of backwards compatibilty.

I dug out an old full tower ATX case to mess about with and realised the mounts required on the corners of the mother board where the push in clip type.  But loved the fact the case was one that has the pull out motherboard mounting tray.

Over the years I have dabbled with computers all the benfits that have come along have been good ones, silly things like the colout coded sockets on the rear for users to put colour coded plugs in etc.

The one thing that still pi$$es me off though are the internal switch and USB pin headers, why dont they supply intermediate plug/socket headers to fit all the seperate fittings to one header..  I have seen one motherbaord supplier do them in thier high end extreme range.
