Rory Gallagher, now your talking. saw him live lots of times in Belfast.
Got his autograph when I was 14,and touched that famous strat.
Best live act I have ever seen, and imo the best slide player there has ever been. :y

Technically amazing, just think the 80s van halan sound has been done to death though.

This guy's pretty special.  Went to see him last year and was truly incredible.

Had tickets for Taste in 1970 at Glasgow Greens Playhouse but it was cancelled but seen him at the renamed Glasgow Apollo in '73.
You're right he was an incredible live act.

Wondered these guys were going to get a mention. Saw Brian May in concert 2 weeks ago and he can still play. 8-) In fact, overall, I think he's my choice for the best. Not the fastest and fairly traditional but  something happens to me when he strikes up one of his solos. I have a (rather aged!) friend who knew him when he was a kid and keeps on about how diappointed his Dad was when he dropped his studying for a career in rock music!

I was a bit dubious about going to see Queen post-Freddie but Brian May and Roger Taylor took much more of the limelight and most impressive it was - including Roger Taylor playing an electric double bass as a percussion instrument. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8OYtBr0cZT8 8-)

Ooh, almost forgot. Steve Rothery of Marillion needs to be included IMHO.

SRV - never understood why his brother, who's still with the world, got so much attention.  In the final concert he played before the helicopter crash Clapton didn't take the guitar break he was supposed to because Stevie was on fire.

I thought this was quite a neat trick:

srv was a great player.apparently he used very heavy strungs to get a better sound. He could do this because he developed callouses on his fingertips which made it possible to bend the thcker gauge strings.
apparently the callouses use to peel off mid performance,so he would super glue them back on and carry on playing. :o :o
Clapton has always been happy to let other guitarists take the limelight when playing on stage with them throughout his career, and on one occasion (at the brixton academy iirc) he did so with a young amereican kid who he had never actually heard or even met before the gig.He was assured the bloke was pretty special so he agreed to let him come on stage and do his thing, and thus the world was introduced to Jimi Hendrix.  8-) 8-)
