My LPG finally fitted
« on: 23 October 2008, 17:09:55 »

Well at last its fitted and running :D

I would like to say a big thankyou to JayW for all his support and information on this little project.

Now i just have to see how well it does on the gas. As i put in 15litres to start with and its gone already and ive only done about 15 miles :-/
But saying that it has been ticking over and been reved up and down to get the thing all up and running, so i will just have to wait and see ;)

I must say tho it seems to be drinking the gas like its going out of fashion although i cant find any leaks and there is no strange smell either :(
I could only get 52 litres in the tank last night as well and its a 80 litre tank :-/
So i should expect to get close to 200 miles on that 52 litres, is that right??

An 80 litre tank should take 64 litres to fill it from empty.  If you're not getting that much I would check the multivalve is at the correct angle (I used a spirit level with an adjustable vial with angles graduated on it).

If the tank angle is incorrect the fuel pickup won't reach the bottom, so you will have residual fuel in there when it runs out.

Failing that, the fill stop valve might need adjustment. I believe this can be done from the outside on a multivalve but I'm not sure how.

I would expect 240-250 miles out of 52 litres on my 3.2.

If there are no obvious signs of a leak give it a couple of tanks and see how it goes, then double check the vapour pressure and the mapping.

Yes i set the tank angle spot on with a small angle level, so i dont think its that, but by christ its drinking the gas.
I will keep a check on it, but i think i will be lucky to get 150 miles on that 52 litres at this rate :'(

Most likely cause is as Kevin said... On the side of the tank there's normally a little cross which marks the orientation of the tank. It should be about half way up from the floor to the top of the tank. I found this out the hard way when i added an extra tank to my Rangie! ::)

A thought ... reset your computer MPG and monitor that for a while ....  it SHOULD still give you figures as if you are running on petrol, as it takes its info from the petrol injector timings etc etc .... Compare the figure to what you got in the past on petrol ....  if the petrol consumption has also "got worse" then it is something unlinked to the LPG directly .. maybe an airleak, blocked air filter/exhaust  etc etc. If the petrol figures are all good but the LPG is down then it confirms the problem is on the LPG side...

As a reference .. my 3.2 is showing an overall petrol figure on the computer of 22.8 mpg, and my spreadsheet calculations show an LPG useage of 18.7 mpg ... which I believe to be about right.

My figures are low because I'm either driving in town or towing .. I do little long-distance solo stuff...

As i said matey, i set the tank spot on with a angle gauge, so i think that bit is fine.

OK. In that case, you said you put in 15 litres at first. Presumably you then burnt some of this and filled it up again until it stopped filling.

I would suggest that either the stop valve is cutting out a bit early and not letting the tank fill to 80% (as I said, i believe you can adjust these on a multivalve) or that the fuel pickup is not quite reaching the bottom of the tank so it didn't completely drain the tank before you refilled it. This would tally with your expression of surprise that the 15 litres didn't last long.

Do you have a manual gauge on the multivalve? Have a look what this indicates when the tank is empty (switches to petrol) and full (filler cuts off). IME this is a reasonably accurate indication of the state of the tank, whereas the electronic gauge needs a bit of fiddling to get it reading right.

I wouldn't necessarily take what the pump says as gospel either. When I first filled mine, it took exactly 64 litres, as expected. I have subsequently refilled it from a state where the engine was still running on gas and it took 67 litres. I believe there is some temperature compensation in the pumps which means you get charged based on the density of the fuel not just the volume. Having said that, 52 litres is on the low side.

Very good suggestion from Entwood. This will confirm the problem is LPG related. Then i think you need to make yourself doubly sure there are no leaks before looking further!

How close are the fuel maps? If there's lots of deviation then I'd suggest mapping it again! I did mine several times to get it right! Now mine has settled down I'm planning to check again and possibly tweak the maps again! :y
