Sky HD+
« on: 26 October 2008, 17:09:58 »

We're thinking about having this Sky HD+ set up, along with Sky Broadband and Sky Talk.

Does anyone have any experience of these services .. or any views ??
We've never had Sky/Cable in any way before so looking for any opinions.. :)

have got Sky+, broadband and skytalk.  Never a prob with any of them.  People say the customer suppoert stinks, can't comment on that as I have never had to resort to them. For the lot I pay around £40 a month, with unlimited phone calls.

Not convinced HD is worth the extra at the mo -- so didn't get it

Changed to above about 18 month ago. Had no downtime to speak of.

Vista Media Center with FreeSat tuners (and Freeview tuners) is the way to go I reckon.

Plus MCE is the best upscaler I've ever come across.

A new update, only available to OEMs (good job I work for one  :-X), now allows 4 tuners and different 'technology' types.

Its called something like TV Pack 2008. Released to OEMs a few months back. I understand it will NOT be offered as a download to anyone except Ultimate owners.

Well, if WinTV from Hauppauge (running on XP Pro) is anything to go by, it won't have to try hard.  >:(

Still looking for a decent software package that can emulate the set and forget ease of Sky+ or Virgin's V+ while running Freeview on PC  :(

been a sky customers for years, in all forms, sky, sky+ and now sky+hd with phone and internet. Customer service has been guite good considering they have to deal with bt for the phone lines(must be a bt phone line to get phone and tinternet sky talk, or it was when we signed up) they will insist on the sky box being connected to the phone line. Just unplug it when the engineer has gone if it causes agro. Its only for interactive services anyway.

Tbh the hd was not worth the bother when we had ours installed lake last year, great picture, but not enough content def worth it for the bigger hard drive tho. Movies in hd are awesome and in 5.1, as most hd broadcasts are, but we had seen them all. Sports in hd are awesome but only the live matches  where in hd. The documentorys where the best pic esp. Discovery. But they where repeated every 2 weeks. So after 2 weeks of flat out hd viewing we had seen it all except the football once a week. So i phoned up, not happy to pay 10 sobs a month for no proper hd content. And after some threats to get then to come and take the hd box out, they just cancelled the hd sub. Which suits me as we still get bbc and channel 4 hd for nowt. We have since
Canceled the sports and movies completely. Seen the movies and they want another 10 quid a month for setanta to watch the other half of the footy games. That would have been a total monthly bill, with movies, sports with setanta, 2 mix packs, of £64 a month just for tv... Bargain.

The box software is not the same as the ordinary sky+ in that, presumably because of the bigger hard drive needed for hd content, it does not respond to the remote that well. Some times when fast forwarding in cant be stopped unless you press back up. Times 30 re winde and f forward are the same as times 12 again due to the hard drive sized on hd content. The box will crash, once a month on average, they all do, not had one the didnt, usually during a recording in some way or other. If it aint crashed for a while i just unplug it before it does(mark the plug up and keep it accessable, you dont want to pull the lounge apart to get to the plug) dont bother ringing up unless you are loosing recordings. Standard answer is, leave the plug out for a minute plug in for a minute then turn the box on. All sorted. So not great you might think...

I would not be with out it. We never watch anything live unless we really want to, its all on there and watch what we want, when we want. Its easy, record a whole series with 2 buttons, record and series link, dont show the Mrs that or itll be full of soaps in no time. You can text it to record a program when your out, and with a digi eye you can
Operate it from anyother room via the rf cable to the box(bedroom and kitchen, not got round to the garage yet needs a powered splitter box for more than one output ) with another remote as if it was in the room with you.  Bloody brilliant i reckon.
We now pay about £42 a month for sky+hd with 6 mixs and 3 free(2 really, luxe is crap) hd channels, phone and 2meg broadband( its only  900gig but that down to bt not sky)with wireless router. Over all very happy with it, but it aint perfect. Hth.

Nope. We pay sky. Sky pay bt.
We also lost caller id. Just ring up sky, they will read you a disclaimer saying you may have to pay bt £99 if the fault is on your property(it wont be) but if it is dont let the guy in and you wont be charged, which you wont be anyway as its down to them.
