Biking Gear
« on: 01 November 2008, 19:45:50 »

I have no clue when it comes to biking gear, i don't know the brand names, cheapo to the best.

Can anyone recommended a helmet? Won't bother with leathers just yet, just some gortex trousers and a jacket.

Are AGV Helmets any good?  :-/

Jackets? - This looks ok...

AGV are ok ,me i prefer ARAI http://www.phoenixnw.co.uk/ but best bit of advice is go to a shop and try one on ,as its a matter of comfort ,boots are a must as are gloves, dont be a fool and ride around with none on because if you do come of 1st thing you do is put your hands down to slow yourself down .IE no gloves no skin left on hands :'( :'( :'(  Try this place they have everything clothing wise under one roof http://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/ and you have one in Northampton as well

Get out and try them. They all fit differently.

The only 2 I get on with are AGV and Arai. Both are good, but Arai feel more secure and fit slightly better.

Spend at leat £250 and you will get a good lid. Bullet proof kevlar layer included.  :y

Buy the best you can especially when choosing a helmet, get one that fits correctly, it has to be comfortable or it will be a distraction. I always liked Hein Gericke gear, good quality and choice. Enjoy your motorcycling, its great fun and relatively safe if you don't go beserk. Walk before you can run etc. Even small engined bikes have incredible acceleration so take care, consider an IAM bike course, great fun and excellent tuition which will make your riding faster and smoother. Up here in t'north east the course is assisted by Durham Police M/C section and they are good instructors. Leathers offer the best abrasion protection but get quite cold when wet, new fabrics like cordura and goretex offer less protection but are waterproof. Don't want to be a party pooper but something which always sticks in my mind after the IAM course is this fact :
At 50mph on a motorway grade surface, unprotected skin wears away at 4 inches per second.
No shorts and T shirts is the message.

Helmets - Get the BEST you can afford.  The same size from differing manufacturers can feel totally different.  Try assorted manufacturers with the same/close size to get the best fit.  Your man at CBT training, if worth his salt, will have explained whats good and not so good.

Clothing - Like helmets, get the best you can afford.  Would not contemplate clothing without CE approved armour.  Anything else will let you down, if and when you need to prove its worth.

Boots - as per the above......

The road and its assorted jaggy bits can hurt when you hit them, even at less than 30 mph.  What you buy now can easily give a few years good use if you spend some time trying before you buy. I think RIDE magazine give good reviews to various clothing/helmets.  Might be worth investigating and getting details....   :y

I got a Caberg Justissimo GT helmet (flip-front) cost £149.99 - VERY noisy, but it doesn't bother me that much.  I'm looking at getting a Shoei or something later on, but still want a flip front.

IXS are good for clothing, I didn't get leathers (couldn't afford), but I'd never get a 1-piece outfit, as well, I'd feel I was a star in some random german fetish film!

Hein-Gericke are good (as mentioned), as is J&S (local to me). http://www.jsaccessories.com/

I'm a bit of a big sod though in regards to getting my clothing (hence not bothering with leathers just yet), and I've only just found somewhere who can get boots in size 50 EUR (16 UK), even Hein Gericke couldn't help with that one!!

All in I spent £350 on clothing (excluding helmet), and the boots I want are another £260!

As said don't skimp on clothing etc get the best you can afford. me and my mates used to be into bikes in my younger days and have seen some horrific cases of gravel rash. It still makes me cringe when I see bikers in summer riding in just shorts and a t shirt.

My own personal advice is Arai or Shoei lids(if they are good enuff for motogp then it does  for me) as for jackets and trousers i have not found anything better than Dainese and boots alpinestars do not uit everyone but i wont have nothing else.I wont lie these are the top end of the market but then again how much do you value your life??? Try looking up www.silvermachine.co.uk they are a good bunch of lads/girls and they wont bullshit you...... :y
