do you use mdf?
« on: 02 November 2008, 10:53:55 »

some things you should know?

i use it everyday at work, machining and routering sheets. the dust is very very fine and stays in the air for a long time. i used to run a small joinery shop which was continuos use of mdf. ive had 7 sinus washes, which are very painful operations, had some infected  bone removed after 1 op, there was mdf particles found after tests were done on the infected bone they removed. i wonder how my health will be in 20 yrs, asbestos was safe, until yrs later.

Mdf contains formaldehyde which is a chemical used as an insecticide for fumigation not a very nice substance to be exposed too.

Its a dangerous business living nowadays. What with formaldehyde in MDF, and cyanide in superglue, and of course the electromagnetic fields given off from mobile phones..........

Musch safer living in a cave  ;D ;D ;D

I think I was told MDF is banned in the US because it is so dodgy.

Mike

Urban myth.

I used MDF for many years, most staircases i made were piranha pine strings with MDF treads and risers.

As long as the machines have effective dust extraction and you use a paper mask then theres nothing to worry about

The dust from most hard and redwoods are just as bad

As Tony H States MDF is not really a safe material to work with, and not on the market long enough to known the short or long term effects of working with it, some of which are only coming to light now :-X
