Buying A 2.5 Auto, Some Questions
« on: 07 November 2008, 20:25:47 »

What are the things to look for/checks to make regarding the auto box? Does the box have any 'foibles' or are they fairly strong? And if crap happens and I buy a car with a duff one, are secondhand ones readily available? Any advice appreciated. Btw I'm not a novice when it comes to cars, just a bit nervous sometimes ;D

Hi

The 2.5 has a gearbox (AR25) that is not as strong as the AR35 fitted to the 3.0litres. It seems to suffer from the failure of a plastic thrust washer at circa 120k miles. Mine did. The symptoms for me were bangs when changing gear and also under hard acceleration "gearbox" came up on the dashboard. If you do a search on the forum for "the dreaded thrust washer explained" you will get some info. There is also plenty of info on changing gearboxes and what fits what and how to do it. Again do a search.

Secondhand ones are available and there are a number of people on the forum breaking cars at any one time. The stronger AR35 can be fitted to a 2.5 litre.

Regular oil and possibly filter changes are recommended but often overlooked. Again bags of info on how to do this on the forum.

When you go to test the car put it through its paces, use the gears manually. Watch the lights on the gearstick display for any wierdness. Changes should be smooth.

AR25's on the 2.5 petrol have generally not been an issues as far as i can see......

My 2.6 has now done 120,000 miles and it's predecessor  My 2.5 Elite was at 160,000, both of them were smooth and effortless.
the gearbox oil should be changed every 80,000 miles, if this is done then the gearshift remain as they should.

Other issues that crop up on autoboxes are the selector switches, they will sometimes fail and give error messages on the MID display

if its a post 98 then i believe the software can be upgraded, however TB or one of the guys with Tech2 can confirm

The AR25 does have issues with 2.5TD engines, there have been plenty of reports of the fabled thrust washer failing on these, the recommendation is to fit the AR35 as per Vache's comments
