How quick would an Omega be on the salt lakes
« on: 09 November 2008, 21:01:14 »

Just seen the top gear guys on the Salt lakes and made me think how the Omega would do on it. Looks like a lot of run :D

Never thought of it like that. I know the Beastie will get up to silly speeds PDQ but unsure as to how that equates to distance. @ 120 you're travelling @ 2 miles a minute, 0-60 8 secs ish, at a guess given acceleration time you'd have 15/20 secs to hit your top whack before the mile was up? :-/

130 mph is probably optimistic....120 -125mph may be closer to the mark in one mile....about 90mph for the quarter mile in about 16 or 17 seconds......110mph  in half a mile ....and maybe 125mph in one mile..adding only about 15mph in the last half mile,

There are not many cars that can reach 150 mph in one mile from a standing start..The faster you go .the slower you accelerate ....the more ground you cover. :y :y :y :y.

On Tarmac, but salt is another answer  ;)

I suspect 120/130

Without drastic action, Hammonds monster muscle car the charger only did 140!

The Omega by Rats (Ringstad auto transmission services) hit 200 odd mph on a banked oval, imagine that would be good for near 250 on the staright.

Lexus V8, ported balanced and stroked with a supercharger, 1000bhp!

Road legal too, awesome machine, Ole chose the Omega because of it's incredibly low Cd factor.

I suspect that was a Monaro VXR in disguise.

125 is my guess, since even Hammond had twice the BHPs as a Miggy.

A mile is nowhere near enough road to hit book speed, which is 150 give or take for a 3.0 / 3.2.

I doubt any Omega would be doing much more than a ton - 120 in those conditions. There was sod all traction until they were into 3rd so most of that speed will have been gained in the latter stages when they could put full power (500+BHP) down without traction problems. With only 200 BHP you would be at a big disadvantage.

Certainly once my Omega is into top gear (on an Autobahn), so over 125 or so, acceleration is pretty modest and I reckon the drag from 125 up to book speed would take a good mile or two. It will see 120+ and then stop safely on a mile of tarmac but that's with a surface on which it won't break traction, flat out from rest.

Ask Lizzie

I agree, a 3.0 and especially a 3.2  should easily achieve 155 as it does on any clear motorway.....er....in.........Germany!!! ;D ;D ;)

As for the salt surface I believed that was hard, just like tarmac, whenever record speed runs have been achieved, so why would there be any loss of speed potential in a miggy? :-? :-?

EDIT:  Just noted the question is about over a mile from 0mph!  So miggy could not reach top speed in that small space as of course you are hiting 2.5 miles every minute at 150 mph. 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

But, why the 0mph start; don't the speed record chasers accelarate up to a top speed before covering a measured mile?! :-? ::) ::)

Yep, so poor traction off the line is not really an issue then (neither is it when there's a couple of turbojets out back). I had a lovely video from the cockpit of this:

http://www.hotrod.com/eventcoverage/113_0701_bonneville_salt_flats/photo_08.html

Which illustrated exactly what was involved (a fellow Megasquirt forum member) but I can't find it any more. Basically it was slip the clutch to stop it bogging down for the first half mile, try to stop it wheelspinning for the next mile and a half then open it up and cling on, trying not to lose your nerve. He points out the mile markers streaming past when he's up to over 300 MPH. :o

There was a staggering amount of steering input being used keeping it on the straight and narrow throughout.  :o

Balls of steel.
