platinum or not I never see a spark plug going 80,000 miles..will degrade the performance and consume more petrol imho.. :-/

Yes indeed Cem, and by then they will be well clogged whatever they are made of!!

If a V6 is clogging plugs, then it probably needs more than just a service  

80k is too much in my opinion, I'm happier with 40k.

I remember you saying that the one I sold you needed plugs on the passenger side James. The car had a full service three months earlier and I was billed for six plugs.

For optimun performance no doubt, like F1 changes / rebuilds their engines after every race.

What  After all those laps at very high revs, with maximum strain placed on all the engine's components and they cannot rebuild or replace the engine?! Not even replace piston rings?!

How about when they blow up?  Also how does the engine survive a whole F1 season without major "treatment" after millions/billions of rev's?

I am amazed Martin!   Tell me what they now have to do please.

No rings - surprised.

No cams - how are they operated then - not pnuematic already!

In this thread I am learning so much about what I just didn't know about F1 engines. 8-) 8-) 8-)  Absolutely fascinating!!

But.......how do F1 engines work without piston rings? :-? :-?

I know they work on very fine tolerances, but how is the side of the piston sealed between the cylinder, given heat and expansion, let alone the pure high pressure of compression? :-? :-? :-? :-?

The valvegear has been pneumatic for several years now,dont know anything about the lack of piston rings though.

Yep.....its the only way to get the valve mass down to supoort the mega high revs.

Everything is such  tight tolerance on them they dont need rings.....they also wont turn over at all if cold (they need heating up first!).

You have to consier that Cosworth removed cylinder liners about 6-7 years ago......the coolant system runs at 6Bar to improve coling adn raise the boiling point....very advanced setups!

Another way of achieving very high revs safely is Ducati,s desmodromic system (no valve springs) but afaik Ducati own the patents and wont allow anyone else to use it.
The thing about them not being able to turn over when cold rings a bell,they are technically "seized" until heated up enough to be able to turn over.
