Well, here in Europe, we have witnessed the arrival of the next generation automobile. Welcome to the electric Gee-Whizz!!

And believe me you
are welcome to it. Take it away quick! Sorry, but I could not be tempted by
ANYTHING to get into the driving seat of this heap of tripe. It looks like a complete farce, has the notable distinction of being the world's first electric deathtrap and, as for its performance...well, who cares?

BUT NOW...
...from the US, we have the Tesla:
I'd jump at the chance to get behind the wheel of this. A super looking vehicle which does 0-60 in 4 seconds, has a top speed around 130mph and can travel 244 miles between charging. And they're being manufactured right now. (see
http://www.teslamotors.com)
OK, it's heinously expensive and there are the usual problems with huge lithium battery packs taking up most of the carrying space, but it's a move in the right direction.
Providing the western economies can get back on their feet again, electric car technology will get better and better. Economic depression will put them back in time but, within a few decades, they will be all the rage, especially if they look this good.

The only problem I see is the fact they are so quiet. Expect lots of pedestrian deaths before someone realises that they need to emit a noise!
