Never really noticed it

Apparently you can get a VECTRA SRI 2.0 T for 13k brand new through the net, What do you all think about it?
It is 175ps and you canchip it to 220 -240ps. Are they any good? The price sounds tempting.

Kostas, ask yourself this...

Would I like the car enough to handle the depreciation of buying a brand new car (be it through the net or anywhere else)?

If the answer is yes, then go for it. :)

I have driven the Astra 2.0 turbo with the same engine, and it is damn quick!

personally i don't think i will ever buy a brand new car... always be second hand.

Although having said that, if i had £35k burning a hole in my pocket, i would buy a Monaro 500  ;)

Be honest Tunnie. You would buy a decent second-hand one and spend the remaining thousands on petrol ;D

Some cars, like the Omega, depreciated very heavily in their early years. This is in part due to the fact that the in many cases fleet buyers sells them after a year or so and this causes over-supply, and in part because the fleet buyers never actually pay retail price – they pay a heavily discounted price in the first place and sell the cars accordingly.

This is true for any non-prestige large saloon, including all Japanese execs apart Lexus (i.e. Nissan QX, Honda legend, Mazda Xedos and 6), as well as the Volkswagen Phaeton. With these cars, unless you are particularly rich or own a small oil filed in the North Sea, it makes perfect sense to buy them second-hand and let someone else - usually a large company - shoulder the depreciation.

However – some cars do not depreciate that badly, and other do not depreciate at all… the latter include the Mini and the Merc E-Series 320 CDI, in both cases you are likely to pay for a nearly-new car almost the same as for a new one… you would typically get some options for free, but that’s about it.

Cars with low depreciation are cars that were NOT favoured by fleets, such as some small Japanese, French, and German cars. In this case it can make sense to buy a new one – if you get the right deal.

Personally I bought my two Omegas as nearly new (the first was 10 months old, the second 5 months), in both cases for around £10k less than the list price. And if you consider the fact that even the full retail price was very good value compared to the German makes, then buying a nearly-new Omega is a deal you can afford to miss… only problem is, they don’t make ‘em anymore.

I'm not really looking to buy one as i don't want to go back to 4 cylinders, i just found it quiet appealing for prople that would like a good new car at a good price, i like it but not enough to handle the depreciation. I would only buy the Vectra VXR brand new as i really really like it, it really is fast. ;D. When it comes to cars one thing i don't have is common sense ;D

Not a vx, but a merc.

I bought one brand new a few years ago...first car i ever bought brand new!....really fancied the SLK230.....but couldnt justify £35k for one......then merc bought out a SLK200......2.0 engine instead of 2.3....still supercharged tho.....for £26k.....so i decided i wanted one.....but wasnt prepared to wait the 8 month waiting list for one....phoned quite a few dealers until i found a cancelled order.....tho i had to pay for extras that had been fitted......5k's worth  :o .....so got it for £31k.....great car....loved it.....but had to sell it as wasnt pratical after 2 years of owning it.......managed to get £21k for it......so even a merc with a waiting list lost £10k in just 2 years  :'(

PS this was when i was doing a different job and not taxi driving  ;D

Clarkson is an idiot, it is obvious that he made the car understeer on purpose and yet again announce the mondeo ST220 the winner. This is the biggest Jokeof the year. I have driven the VXR and yes it torque steers and understeers if you don't know how to drive it properly and respect the 280ps that come out of the engine. I personally found the car perfect for my likes. We know that JC hates Vauxhalls.

Try an E-series Diesel Estate next time instead - it's the lowest depriciating car on the market....

Apart from the Monaro  ;) Which is a real Vaux anyway! lol!

For the money (around 18-20k) - I'd have the Monaro VXR over the VXR Veccy anyday....

Monaro is so much more comfy, looks better, and is RWD. - I think it will hold its value better too

The car that clarkson drove on TG was pre production, vauxhall were pressured into giving them a car that, by vauxhalls own admission, was not set up to final spec, it was a mule car that was being used to iron out the understeer and torque steer issues.

Clarkson then set about tearing the car to bits and slagging it off, especially the two aspects that he had been warned were not ironed out on this car, Vauxhall by all accounts have now told TG that they will not get first dibs on any new cars and they will have to wait until the likes of Fith gear and the reat of the motoring press have had a drive.

Although Clarkson was peeved when he was made to eat his hair live on air after vauxhall released a car that looked almost the same as the mock up pictures that had been banded about, laugh, i almost emptied my bladder.

Clarkson loves his fords, simple as that

Clarkson likes Fords - he owned a GT for a while. He doesn't like Mercs after McLaren refused to let him do a test drive because he'd lost his licence.

However, once you accept that Clarkson is not an Automotive Journalist (he's and entertainer), and TG is not a car review programme (its an entertainment programme), then you realise he is good at what he does....

Hmmmm....interesting. Due to the lack of serious motoring progs on telly, I reckon quite a few people take Clarksons reviews seriously. As such, he should be warned that if he deliberately misrepresents a certain manufacturers products, litigation will ensue.
