A bit simelar to the Cops being struck off for being on the the BNP list really.

With the first link, my personal view is that sacking was harsh, after such an impecable record.

If there was evidence that he was using extremist views in the way he dealt with people then fair enough, sack him...

But for making a private joke just with a colleage, for me doesn't evidence that the person involved really holds any discriminatory views - more just bad taste  :-/

the met has been in the news lately with rascism claims from the asst commisioner i believe.300grand pay off havent they offered him. could be using him as a scape goat and made an example of him just to show they dont tolerate rascism.excellenmt case for race relations id say. we all joke about colour, race, disability,anything to make you laugh. it part of life

Do Police Officers have to be saint's these days ?  We have all, at some point, made ill thought out remarks -- they don't reflect our innermost attitudes or beliefs.

Be honest -- how many times have you sworn you hated someone -- does that now make you a hateful person --- have you ever uttered "I will kill you / her / him "  -- I have I am sure -- does that make me a murderer.

Point out the error of their ways -- but this knee jerk reaction just to prove political correctness is way over the top !

I think the first joke is nothing, a bit silly, but...... Let he/she who is without sin throw the first stone. Nobody is perfect, and I imagine life in the police force is very stressful, so the occasional reaction to stress is to be expected. What did the person being detained do during arrest?.

The Police can't be perfect all the time, yet some people try and force them to be. The net result will be to influence police actions, eg a problem in a coloured area, so should a white police person go in, and risk offending somebody by offending their "rights", often I suspect invented for convenience. Now lets see, it is a Scottish custom to wear the Skian Dhu, tucked into their sock. So I can walk around with one, and not be done for carrying a dangerous weapon ?.
I think the net effect will be to demoralise the Police force, and who ever made this judgement should be sacked immediately.

Agreed - I guess the same could be said for many things - sports players carrying baseball bats, fishermen carrying knives for fishing tackle... etc.... most are capable of being carried for an innocent purpose - it's when they're misused that problems arise.
