Sorry to hear of your discomfort. I have heard stories where dentists deliberately do unnecessary work to qualify for more government money.  I hope that is not the case here but it seems strange that such a young kid would need 2 teeth out

ive been told this too. ive been told i need a tooth out, and ive also been told the tooth doesnt need to come out.   :-?

That's not always a case of unnecessary work -- more like a lazy dentist!!  Far easier to remove a tooth than try to save it  :-/

So it would appear.

We have just changed dentists due to our usual one turning private and wanting best part of 50 quid a month from us as part of a dental plan (she can break off!).

Now, considering we all had a check up in September, we went to the new guy and.

The wife - One filling to a cavity that has apparently been there some time.
Me - A filling although not to a cavity but an area on a molar hat might b prone to one so its a precautionary measure.

and my poor little lad apparently needs 4 fillings....under anesthetic!

There are a few things I cant understand.

We clean Wills teeth twice a day very thoroughly and have done since he was very young (in fact before his rear teeth were through). He hardly eats any sweets, has a good diet and drinks mainly water (and fresh fruit juice with his meals).....and why the hell were they not spotted in September.

We are off to a consultant in the new year for a second opinion!

The teeth were no savable and this is the only dentist i have had faith in, his adult teeth were above them and he had an abcess so if she dint remove the other tooth then the infection would have kept coming back, i am in no doubt she did the right thing :y

feel very lucky we have a dentist who is both still nhs, and we can trust.

Very thorough!

As a kid, I never brushed my teeth, which I think is what caused me to be where I am now.....

only 1 tiny filling, and only had 2 wisdom teeth out!

My theory is I built up a protective layer of plaque, all this abrasive brushing wears em out faster  ;D

I now use on of these sonicare brushes....before hand I use to go to the hygenist about once a year for a scrape and polish, since using leccy toothbrushes for a few years.....havent seen the hygenist since!
not cheap, but paid for itself in lowered dental bills!

Our dentist went private £20 a month for 5 of us and we do trust him - he hates extracting teeth as that means he has failed

Tooth decay is mainly down to diet. Eating snacks in between meals causes acid attacks more frequently thus eroding the enamel on the teeth. Alot of foods and drink cause acid attacks even Orange juice which is second only to Cola for the severity of attack. Best to eat any sweets just after your meal causing just the one attack than in between and definetely cut out juice and fizzy drinks.  By the way my wife is a Dental Hygenist and we have two children aged 7 and 5,she ensures treats are kept to a minimum. :y

when i was about 12, it was discovered my mouth was too crowded for teeth, and i needed 4 removed  :o

2 from each side at the top.

It was either that or a brace, and my dad did not have any luck with them, so out mine came, bloody hurt as i recall!

Will has no snacks (maybe some fruit) between meals and only drinks water between meals....so go figure that one.

I am happy that in your case it was genuine.
Everyone has there own experiences - e.g. my dentist was telling me for 2 years i needed a filling and when the practice changed hands, i was told i didn't need one!

Well this is going to give me a chance to have a good old rant: I hope these isn't a dentist here.

right, i work in financial services.  Everything we do is done by three people.  First does it, second checks it, third makes sure the first to have really thought about what they are doing.  Ok makes a lot of sense.  So if we get it wrong, what happens, someone loses money.  solution, well unravel what you did and you are ok.

Now think about the medical world, you trot along to the dentist, it's one fella on his own.  nobody is making sure his judgement is spot on every time.  Who is there to check he is right or review his work?  Same for doctors.  If they get it wrong, well you've lost a vital organ or worse....

Just think about this for a minute, most people on here know a bit about cars: we don't got to these glossy high street chains because we know they are useless.  Now if we knew about teeth would we see a dentist?

After that I think I'm off to set up a new forum.  how about www.dentureowners.com or www.teethowners.com

Good to hear your boy is ok!
