The older driver
« on: 30 November 2008, 10:43:09 »

My mother came to stay for a few days the other week (birthday boy ;)). She drove us up to the local super market where she parked up in a space & the adjacent space was empty. She then switched off the engine & started to get out, i sat there for a second or two thinking she's not leaving the car like this is she :o She'd parked about three feet from the car on my side & when i got out i commented that she had parked about a foot over the white line on her side, to which she replied "i'm old & i don't care, that's what happens when you get old"  :o :o My mother used to take great pride with her driving skills, but now she doesn't care & i was shocked :( :(

I can't say that i've taken a deal of notice before, but now i'm starting to & it's true, they don't care >:( >:(.
Does this apply to most older drivers, has anyone noticed the same?

I don't think you can categorise, I'm a member of RoSPA and have passed my advanced driving test (the RoSPA one is pretty strict).

There are several members in there 80's, who are gold standard.

To stay a member you have to be re-tested every 3 years.

A mate of mine has just finally managed to prise the keys of his 92 year old mother in laws Mini away from her.He said she was a danger to herself and everyone she came across on the roads.
I would have thought that loss of reactions and senses such as eyesight and hearing is an unavoidable consequence of getting older.
Having said that, you do see old racing drivers ,such as Stirling Moss who can still drive,so it isnt a hard and fast rule.

Uhm, i know what you're saying AA. I can still recal my grandfather's driving (who was an advanced driving instructor), i'm not dissing you or you buddies, but his driving was in my mind was not safe at times. Infact the whole family would comment about it. It's my own thoughts & i'll stand by this "almost anyone can drive how they are expected to at the given time, but also can revert back to their normal, every day driving standard afterwards". These are my observations ;)

Edit; this applies to everyone & not just the older driver :y

I am not worried too much about older drivers, as I can cope with them; although traffic wardens around my way will issue penalty tickets if you park over the lines!!

No, it is my old hate, damn women in 4x4's driving them and then parking the beasts without any skill or consideration for other people.#

Yet another did it to me in an Ashford car park, by parking her filfthy Shogun about six inches from my o/s! ::) ::) ::)  I was watching her from a distance, and believe me she soon moved it once I was finished!!! >:( >:( >:( >:(

So your mother Pete, or any older person, are no problem compared to those bitches!! 8-) 8-)

The very young and the very aged are a problem....as I have said before ....it is quite easy for some geriatric old coffin dodger to pass through  red lights......drive on the wrong side of the road.....turn right in front of a biker .......and wipe out a whole class of kids waiting for their bus home......and be almost oblivious  to their poor driving....

What are the words to that song from the sixties,.....oh yes"..."hope I die before I get old".....Sh#t almost too late for that now. ;D ;D :y :y

Why do people think that it is a good idea to sell their car with the words..."only one lady owner"?.

In reality this means the clutch and gearbox will be fu##ed and the car will have parking dents ....front ....back and quite possibly both sides . :-/ :-/ :-/ :y

Mrs Optimist much better in an auto.....much less for her to think about. ;D ;D :y

My old dad is 84 (and 3/4) and I must say he is picking up more scuffs and minor dings than he used to ( all those other drivers according to him!).  My biggest gripe with him is that, as a disabled badge holder ( which I think he should never have been given!) he thinks he can park anywhere and sod everyone else .... I keep trying to explain that an obstruction is still an obstruction whether it has a badge or not .... but will he listen ?????

Anyway -- it's his night vision that worries me most. In the dark he can't see a thing  :o

He shouldn't be driving then, and the DVLA are obviously not being informed of the facts which is wrong! :o :o

I had my dad removed from the road due to eyesight problems and other medical issues.  He didn't like it one bit, but for his safety let alone others it was the right thing to do! 8-) 8-) 8-)

Provided it isn't on a busy car park on a sat afternoon, that's how I park my Omega. I spent it's market value on paint work this summer so I don't want some bu66er opening their doors into mine!  ::)   :y
