Cheers

It's a right pain the thing is working fine got rid of some nasty little viruses but by mistake I must have ticked basevideo while unticking
safeboot in system config utility.  Now bloody stuck in cmd.exe within safemode, I'm sure all it takes is the right comd prompt and I'll be back in normal safe mode just dont know what it is  >:(

you need to edit your boot.ini file to remove the /basevideo bit ...

If you can't edit it from the computer you have a problem with try copying a boot.ini from another XP machine direct to the faulty one ..

boot.ini is a hidden file in c:\

A "standard" boot.ini looks like this ..  :

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

At command prompt type following lines, hit enter at end of each line-

attrib c:\boot.ini -s -h
edit c:\boot.ini

DOS editor should load.  Remove refs to basevideo - file contents should look similar to Entwoods above.  When its ok save it and exit editor.  You should be at the dos prompt. type

attrib c:\boot.ini +s +h
exit

Then reboot - should be ok.
