rather Omegas
« on: 31 December 2006, 17:54:52 »

Just from the threads posted today we have hit on four COMMON problems with omegas:-

1) Manual gearboxes are sh*te

2)  They mist up badly

3) Divers door locks dont like wet, damp weather

4) Door check straps were designed by a five year old.

Why do we bother? >:(

1) Some of these have covered many miles, probably on original oil
2) Not if scuttle drain is kept clear and vents are clear
3) Yup
4) They work OK for me. Admittedly, I've only owned 2 Omegas though...

The Omega ain't perfect though, but regular maintenence does appear to be the key.  If yours has not been looked after in a previous life, you are going to have problems...

Dont get me wrong, I love my omega, and, of course, the upside is that if people are aware of these problems, then you will will always be able to get one cheap :y

Omegas do have the problems, but you know what? I have NEVER seen an Omega dead on the side of a road. Shed loads of french cars, loads of Megane's and Pug 307's. A 53 plate 307 had the bonnet up today with an AA guy underneath it, southbound on the m40!

Mine didn't die on the side of the road it died right in the middle of 4 lanes of traffic in the centre of town. I was in bed (night shift) and recieved a phone call from a very panicked wife to 'please come & help' (that was the printable gist of it!  ;) ) I arrived from one direction on my m/bike as my Dad arrived from the other with his "not-a-sensor-insight-20-year-old-Grandada" complete with tow pole. Towed it to his house and it then started first turn of the key!  >:(

Mine died 3 times near Dijon (Central France) - once approaching service area, and twice approaching laybys (they have extra emergency laybys as well as hard shoulder).  Didn't dare risk it again, so went home without it...

Yes, as car restarted when it cooled a bit. After 3rd time, I knew I wasn't going home in it...

I take it the crank sensor is the most common form for a car to die on the road?? - I suppose after cam belt fail, over heat ect...

I believe its the only sensor on V6 that hasn't got a limp program.  If you get a GM V6 for your trip, take a spare sensor with you...

Think i'll do that, browsing eBay today for lhd drive cars. Few interesting ones:

'92 BMW 525i Manual with leather went for £770
'92 Saab 9000 Saloon 3.0 V6 went for £821 but did not hit its reserve.

Been browsing videos on youtube of driving in poland, german, and though the alps... think i might need a left hooker  :-[
