I think it was pre homeburnt DVDs - lot of older players played up.
Never seem a non Sony (or Sony innards) that could not play DVD-R - and I was an early adopter of DVD.  I seem to recall one of my earlier players, from memory it might have been the Lecson, that struggled with DVD+R that were not marked with booktype DVDROM.

I know Sony put something in the formware on some of their early stuff to block it playing non pressed disks.  Wonder if TD's issue is related to this, or if it was just shit firmware   :-/

I read on video website.....to use DVD+R as I stood a better chance than using DVD-R for Sony players, so never tried dvd-r's.......should I??  :-/
I tried some other makes of dvd+r's before I tried Sony dvd+r's. Maybe i was just unlucky on the makes I picked on, but it was only the sony's that worked  :o when I was making copies of dvd's (backup purposes obviously)

Tho I think its probably easier to go get a £20ish player that will play mpg2's.
Altho I already have one.....liteon one....but I want that on the tv in the living room....as its got a HD in it.
Get a Media Center  ;)

How early adopter

I started in 1999
Be a similar sort of time - started with DVD reader in computer (then laptop which plugged in to TV), probably around 2000 got first standalone player, first writer when +R first released, first standalone DVD recorder when Philips released the DVR880 (thats still working and used in dining room (as a player only)).  Still got, and occasionally use, my first HDD recorder - Pioneer dvr5100 (good machine in its day, but a bit complex for her)

In 1999 I went DVD then Dolby Digital then a few months later DTTV

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139176

Had this model for over year without problem, this plays practicaly anything, and usb and sd support its very flexible.
Pretty much all 'no-name' divx players will play pretty much anything.  The downside of the cheaper stuff tends to be 'adequate' (at best) upscaling.

Hence my mention of Pioneer, plays anything not HDTV, and audio from mp3 to SACD/DVD-A

And it was only £110 :y

Ive been messing about with video files and trying to get them to play on a SONY dvd player......without much luck  >:( ......it doesnt wanna know about them.....even tho on the front of the player it says VCD MPG  >:(
Ive tried creating vcd's .....nope doesnt wanna know about them.
Ive tried creating mpg2 files on cd ....it doesnt wanna about them either.
The only thing it will recognise is if I do a direct copy of a dvd onto a dvd+r .... and then it seems the make of the dvd+r has to be sony  :o
Other make dvd's it doesnt like either  >:(

Tho the sony dvd player is about 10years old i think....maybe older...i remember it cost £350 when new and its only a fairly basic model.

I thought id try unlocking it, to see if that helped......after search on the interwebby.....it seems that model you have to pull it apart and do some rewiring and add another IC  >:(

I should add ive another dvd player thats a few years old....a liteon player with a 160gb HD in it.
It doesnt seem to care what i put in it.....vcd's....mpg2 files on cd.....it just plays em  :y
Im about to test out what it makes of a 4Gb mpg2 files on a dvd+r......but i suspect it will just play it! (when the pc has finished creating the mpg2 file)

Think the Sony is about to get the bin treatment......and i'll get another cheap dvd player that can play mpg2 files.....

So.....any recommendations??......fairly cheap and can play mpg2 files on dvd

buy a 20 quid cheapo from asda   they will even read data off a cheese slice   :y

Doug

Well i went one better this morning  ;D
Thought I would start on the cheapest one Tesco's did (As I was in there anyway) and take it back if it wouldnt play mpg files....and exchange for next expensive one up until I got one that played mpg's....good plan i thought  ;D

So tesco's own brand 'value' was the first one at £14.97

Didnt need to take it back.....works a treat  :y :y

Sorry, I know it`s rather 'obvious' question; but have the burned discs (that are not playing in the Sony DVD player) been 'finalised/closed' on the computer or DVD recorder that made them?

Dont be sorry Debs......its a good question.....and not obvious at all.

Session has been finalised....disc not.

Not how i personally like to finish off a disc, but the roxio software i use....wont let me finalise the dvd, only the session.

And really if a £14.97 tesco's dvd player will play the dvd's, so should the bl**dy Sony (just goes to show how fussy it is!!).......but hey.....ive found a solution....and at £14.97....carnt be bad  ;) ;D

The earliest DVD players are pre DVD-R so do not necessary play them very few of the pre 2000 players would handle them NOTHING to do with how much was spent.

Reflectivitivy was the issue

Im using Sony DVD+R's which i found out.....is the best chance on Sony DVD players.....if I use another prog that will copy a commercial dvd (for backup purposes obviously  ;) ) onto a Sony DVD+R then the Sony player is happy and play it.......so its not the type of discs im using  :y

Not sure it was, as most could be got to work via firmware, which would imply laser mech was capable
