Should I update to IE7?
« on: 13 December 2008, 23:51:44 »

Wants to apply two updates WGA - which I disable and IE7

Is IE7 any good as I am generally happy with IE6?

Have they fixed the spelling?

I  like IE7. Use FF and it won't matter anyway.

IE6 is Guiere Cheese. Update before 7am Sunday or a million Russian malware popups will greet you at your next logon.

Honestly....

Unless you are blagging your XP licemse, WGA should be OK. And if you are, perhaps Linux is the OS for you.

Most people find IE7 a little difficult to use initially - people were used to IE6, which looked same as IE5, similar to IE4 etc...

Personally, I prefer IE7 to IE6, but the fact Shift-Click opens a new IE window rather than new tab is annoying sometimes.

Normally, I would recommend IE7, but I know your resistance to Vista which I suspect is mostly because its different, so not sure I can recommend to you to have ie7.

I'm sure you have friends/family already using it, might be worth having a look first, as I'm pretty certain IE7 cannot be cleanly removed.

Firefox is an option and will coexist with IE and other browsers, but remember it increases your attack surface, and Firefox has a very poor security history, so always ensure you keep it absolutely up to date (3.0.4 at time of writing).

Whilst on the Firefox rant - just under 25% of OOF's Firefox users are NOT using the latest version. FF users, not currently on the latest (or the later betas), UPGRADE NOW!

As to WGA, unless to have a dodgy copy of XP, its fine, leave it enabled.

The WGA 'failures' that hit the anti MS sites such as TheRegister a few years ago were blown out of proportion, and most of them were due to cracked copies and key sharing.

In your case, though, you have broken the Licence Agreement by transferring your OEM copy  :-/

As TB says, it is a lttle different at first, but it doesn't take long to adjust.
The other week i tried IE8 beta, but i wasn't impressed so i came back to IE7.
The security features are supposed to be better on IE7 than IE6 :y

Security may be better, but it is also annoying.  Click on links in OOF and nothing happens.  Haven't bothered sorting out approved sites yet.

I still generally prefer IE6, but if you're on the net a lot then I think you will have to get used to IE7 at some point for the security.

I'm a social outcast, I like Opera. Used to use FF but the latest versions seem to have a wierdie in the browser history where it only shows the first dozen sites you opened after installing it.

IE7 is excellent, but be careful of the add-ons.  For a long time, my IE7 frequently used to exit when I opened a new tab from in-line links.  I eventually tracked this down to the Epson printer add-on and now that I've disabled that, it all works fine.

I've also got Safari - don't know where it came from - probably iTunes.  That is excellent too, less clutter, and seemingly bulletproof.  I used to use it when IE let me down.  Never got on with Firefox, although I haven't tried the latest version.

BTW - what is iTunes?  I installed it because someone told me it could convert .wma files to .mp3, but I never worked out how.   :)

Apple are infamous for fixing security faults, esp if they think its someone else's fault.

There is a blended attack vector for Safari on Windows, due in part to default settings of Safari, and in part to the way Windows accesses the desktop.  Neither is a problem on its own, but together they are a killer.

Apple have publically stated they will not fix this particular Safari issue, as they believe its not (entirely) their fault. So their consumers suffer.

If you have Safari for Windows, be careful

Thing is I have few issues with IE6, as to licence - same case, keyboard, monitor

WGA - do I actually need it? Just more bloat

I disable so much stuff on XP it makes my work PC quicker than collegues with newer PCs at work.
