microsoft are aware of this fault and will fix for free, but, this is an easy fix apparrently, but the best option is microsoft to fix, they have extended the warrentee to cover this on 360's, you need to phone them, even if yours is out of warantee

do not use the 'wrap up in blanket' fixes!

Call Microsoft (0800 587 1102) and they will tell you if its covered (probably by serial).

There is no simple cheap fixes (there is a tedious fix that may work in some circumstances).

call microsoft and on the back of the xbox is a serial number
they will give you a warranty in your name on that serial number
they wil then arrange a date for UPS to come and collect it
they collected mine and i got mine back on saturday morning
brand new console and with warranty
all it cost me was a free phone call to microsoft a card board box and some tape
worth the wait if you ask me
i tried the towel trick. IT DONT WORK
