laptop dilemma, running out of machines to sell.
« on: 15 December 2008, 21:31:03 »

my supplier has a load of dell cpi lappies for me, but they are more like those web books, as they dont have cd drives, they are good machines, but my question is this, they all have xp with sp3, office software, would this put you off buying one, the fact they have not got any cd drives

Ive had my new laptop for 5 weeks now and havent used the dvd drive yet, everything i put on it was installed from usb drives or downloaded from the net. I think cd's will soon go the way of the floppy disc.

Are these the ones you buy the 'clip on' dock that goes under the machine that has the DVD/CD drive and extra ports.

Think the other Dell is the D400 that does this

Hmm...If you want to buy a laptop without a cd/dvd drive always make sure that you make a recovery USB. Otherwise you are in trouble if your system is down ;) Otherwise there aren't many ways to actually use the drive...

I suspect your market is the person who wants a cheap laptop for the kids, basic but "their laptop".  Provided you can show it can do the usual stuff kids want, they should go for it, esp if you emphasise that fact how small, light and portable compared to  P4 laptops they are.

Had to buy a docking station for my laptop (Compaq Presario x1000) JUST so I could have a serial port! Used it 2-3 times trying to learn about PIC chips! (ONE day, I will dig it all out again - If only there was enough hours in a day!  :'( :'()
