Don't want to sound / appear thick but how can you not use brakes going down a hill in an Auto?  I tried this out and whilst the box changed up a gear, the braking effect did not seem to be enough.  Unless, of course, I just bottled it!

I was always taught brakes are for stopping (took my test 1992).  I guess that on regular roads this is fine - it is just more challenging situations that require a different approach.

I always use the gears to slow down in a manual, force of habit.

I may be interested - what is the approx cost per head?

Thats crap teaching........it is interesting seeing a stream of cars with smoking brakes and grease running out the wheel bearings!
Its the current way for some daft reason.

I asked one of the kids at work, turns out its because modern brakes are better, brakes are cheaper than gearboxes, and it brings on the brake lights every time you slow down.

I say 'dangle berries'  :-X

I can KIND OF see the point. I'd rather change the Omega's front pads than an autobox...

Although on the other side of the argument, brake lights being constantly on, mean that if for any reason you suddenly have to brake hard, the tailgaiting twit behind won't see any lights "come on" as a warning, and will plough straight into your rear end :)

The g/boxes are strong enough, and many cars still have underated brakes (I include our Rover 25).  I don't really buy the brakelight tosh either - should be more aware of situation than to have to be warned by brakelights

Again Jaime, I totally agree that everyone should be aware of keeping a safe distance....

But you and I and everyone else here... knows that 80% or motorists are tailgaiting bastards that aren't aware of the nose on the front of their face :D

So unfortunately we need to make allowances for them, in order to increase our own safety...

something to bare in mind when i go around Europe.

I was surprised when TB said i can boil my break fluid!!! Breaking using the autobox was something i never considered, and tbh had not seen action until in TB's MV6 on the way to Northampton.

I can see their point about brake lights, however when i was told off i pointed out, what if the brakes failed?? Drums exploded, no fluid, you need to know how to brake the car using the gears. My BSM bod just shrugged it off.

because as has been debated by those elected by us, we are taught to pass our driving test. Actual driving comes with years of practice/experience

No car can stand a mountain pass by using the brakes alone......

Sports mode switch will change down into third.

Additional braking - engage second.

Extreme braking - engage first.

I have managed to drive a car a couple of miles using engine braking and hand brake on one wheel - a drum had burst and popped a cylinder.

Managed to get bits and fix at end of journey before going home, long gaps and being carefull

[smiley=embarassed.gif]  OK yes, I was being thick and it is obvious when you think about it. In fact, thinking about it (and feeling even more embarrassed  [smiley=embarassed.gif] [smiley=embarassed.gif] [smiley=embarassed.gif]) I used this myself descending a steep hill in Devon last year.........

So apologies for asking a stupid question!!
