At the risk of a family break up you've got to try it tunnie. Nothing like it and yes was well impressed by the dvd, but what about the camera man?  he had a mad russian bike for a while ::)

Tbh i'd love to go around Europe on a bike, but it would be far too dangerous.

Its just totally different, clutch is finger controlled, gears by slight movement of the foot. Just got to give it a go!!  ;D
Not sure I'd fancy Europe on my bike - fuel stop every 160 miles, and a sore arse. And all the protective gear in hot weather...

You need a tourer really, Long Way Round used those BMW bikes Ewan's back was straight as he was riding so it's a very upright bike.

It looked great on the DVD, but i think a 3.0 V6 could be more fun in the Alps  ;D

Some of the best holidays I've had was riding around europe with my mates. We followed a few of the WSB and GP races from Jerez to Valencia.

Full kit is ok, good shower at the end of the day is far better than losing lots of skin!!!!

Most 3* hotels in Europe knock spots of our supposed 5* ones and B+B in most hotels was circa £15 a night including secure/underground parking

The B roads (stay off boring motorways) are better than ours and take in some awesome twisties

Most Europeans have had a scooter while at school and are bike aware....often had many a french/spanish/dutch etc drive mount the verge or pavement in traffic jams to let bikes pass

I've got a 1991 GPZ900R, good comfy old bike that can shift well too  ;D I'm also 6ft 2" and I find it a good compromise between a sports and a tourer. The other big advantage of being a 15 year old bike is that I've got it on Classic Insurance with Footman James. Agreed value, unlimited miles and less than £150  :)
I've been dying to get it out for a blast for the last couple of months, everytime the weather has been reasonable, I've been busy with something else  :'(

As for bikes being dangerous, it can only go as fast as you twist the throttle and bikers tend to be much better at reading road surfaces than car drivers. Two wheels + diesel or gravel is not a good mixture!

Cheers Jim

The fleet consists of a Singer Chamois Coupe, an Imp based kit car - BS Nymph, and a Kawasaki GPZ 900R (& a Toyota RAV4 LPG for the work horse!)

They have to be - it hurts more ;)

I'm embarrassed to say my stunt was in fine weather, dry roads...   ...approaching a roundabout, looking for a gap, thought the car in front had gone, realised too late it hadn't, snatched front brake, lost it :(. Somehow, I missed the car, but it still hurt...

I used to have a ZZR1100c... :D

Not much better out there I have to say. Mine was also derestricted with a couple of mods (previous owner) and it went like an absolute rocket!

I like the Blackbird also, a friend has one (had it since new in 1999) but it feels "softer" and less urgent. Still excellent to ride though. :)

Not ridden for a few years now, came off, and just missed an artic... makes you realise how exposed you are! Also SWMBO has made her feelings rather clear!  :-[

I think the roads would be a heck of a lot safer if everyone had to be on a bike for 6 months before learning to drive!
Most motorists lack of road awareness is firghtening.

Boys bikes ;)

It was pretty quick 145 is not slow, acceleration - well it did shift, handling was quite good but a 250 was quicker in slow tight corners.

I managed to leave behind a hard driven Sierra with picnic table on the boot.

My first proper bike was a 100cc one as I was still at school and lived in the countryside. It was a Suzuki GP100 - first 100cc bike with a real front brake - it did brilliant stoppies! Can't remember if twin piston or sliding caliper. I ended up tuning it as well, acheivements include a Honda CB125T and a GP125, it was up geared and still pulled hard into the red. Genuine 80mph was easily achieved (still accelerating before a RB)

Any 250 or higher should leave any standard car for dust...

Hmm I'd say a standard high 20s bhp 250 is similar in acceleration to a say a 2.0 H/C Carlton (remember I used to deliver cars)

A decent 250 should be 40+bhp, and the last one I was one was a flyer...
