The Sales
« on: 28 December 2008, 03:04:07 »

Comet for the last few years have said "We dont do slaes " - "We just have constantly low prices"   Now they are having a sale.

PCWorld on TV advertised "A stock clearance"  do I read too much into that statement.

MFI are/have going/gone into administration.

Not 100% whats happening to Woolies but it's going.

The big names are just not safe anymore.  The news yesterday mentioned shoopers going for a look round, and shops seem to get the impression that consumers are waiting for sale prices to drop even further.

Now shops dont exactly help themselves when they start the January on the 20th of December do they.

I was hoping to pick up Carpets, a Suite, along with maybe a TV, Dishwasher and a few other items with a view to moveing home  whilst the sales were on.  But more delays are making this awkward for me as I cannot get a completion date for the work I am having done.

A TV I could use or store, a dishwasher I need as I move.  Carpets I may well get a deal and offset the fitting date.

The thing is.  A brand Sony/LG/Samsung 32" LCD is hovering arround £325, I feel this could drop under £300 in January.  A 42" LG can be bought under £500 so maybe others will compete.   Dishwashers havent really dropped in price yet.  (Lots of washing up over Christmas and New Year) so there is still time yet.

But what happens if I get a moving date and I find a Suite and Carpets I like.  No one lets you pay on delivery and TBH I am getting scared of paying for something and the company going bust.

I dont have credit cards.  The one I do have has a £200 limit, and I have never allowed it to be increased as it is purely for emergencys so would not cover the cost of major furniture purchases.

After the airline going bust earlier this year and still taking bookings upto midnight of the day before they "popped" leaving holiday makers stranded then I just dont trust any of these companies any more.

As a former employee of comet i pissed myself when i hear the sale bit on the advert as your right skruntie comet did not do sales just low prices(yeah right)...But i was talking to a mate who still works at comet in 1 of the stores he`s seen and heard of the redundacies in the last 3 months of mid level managers and surplus staff(agency) being let go or not replaced and to top it all a lad i know who still works at comet via the distribution depot at wolvo has seen both HDP and Service engineers not being replaced thus putting more work on those that are still there somehow i dont think Comet will be around for much longer as they are losing heamoraging money quite bad espec when a drug addict allows his fuel card to be handed over to his dealer to pay off his crack debt(this was in the local newspaper) and running up a £14,500 bill in 6 mths!!! thats a lot of nectar points lost Hull..... :o plus when the hdp merged with service 4yrs ago they wrote off nearly £30,000 worth of stock that had mysteriously gone missing between west brom and wolvo  :-? plus every 3 months or so the stores in service dept have a clear out and dump in the skip spares and parts that they can not send back even though they are brand new :-? and put a hammer through tv screens cause they cant sell em in the discount shop cause they let the lease lapse and thus have to dispose of em as per the govt regs....Theres a lot of bad management practises goin on at comet and i feel sorry for a lot of the employees but that company is sick and its gonna die a slow and lingering death like woolies in my opinion :'(

Too right matey.  Too many agency staff that dont give a toss.  Give them a full time job and promotion chances it would be so different.

But so badly organised as you say.  I have heard of plenty of fiddles within Comet and the like, and to be honest I dont know how they survive.

Obviously massive buying power gives lots of flexibility.
