What do you think? Good idea or just another money spinner.?

It maybe part of harmonising the situation across the EU. In Spain you have to have a medical at 50 and then every five years (I think) after that in order to keep a licence. The medical costs between 18 euros and 40 euros depending on where you go.

Depends what kind of health test it is. For instance, if I was allowed to say to the examiner 'I'll give you a 5 metre start and, if I catch you, I'm allowed to punch you in the face', then I reckon I'd pass.

Any HGV/PSV after 45 has to have a health checkup for his licence every 5 years and it costs whatever your doctor wants to charge my last one cost me £65 but if my company were paying it would have been £120 ......

personally i think it is an excellent idea, i think it should be compulsory as well.

It would go a long way to reducing the amount of people who are not fit for the road, well in theory it would anyway.
The sad reality is someone would turn it into a money spinner by offering to take the test on behalf of someone who quite clearly wouldn't pass.

i would go so far as to say i think driving should be retested every 10/15 years as well.

I also believe that anyone getting behind the wheel of a car should have lessons on the motorway and also be taught the art of car control, very much like sweden, in addition they should be taught basic mantainence as well

i know it wouldn't make me popular but i believe it would improve the standards we have on the road today

You're expected to be able to identify various parts from under the bonnet for your driving test now. How that helps you to be a good driver I'll never ever know .....  :-/ If you're no good with tools at the side of the road, buy an AA/RAC/etc card

i'm talking about being able to change a tyre and identify when a tyre is illegal that sort of stuff

A medicals a good idea if it's implemented properly.
For what it's worth evrey driver should take a re-test every 10 years, not a proper first time test, because hey we'd all fail that, but a basic one. I saw a guy in the local car park the other day & the way he drove, he'd never pass.
This would cut the accidents down by alot, but i guess they wouldn't make enough money outa it COKS, all of them.

For what it's worth evrey driver should take a re-test every 10 years, not a proper first time test, because hey we'd all fail that, but a basic one. I saw a guy in the local car park the other day & the way he drove, he'd never pass.
This would cut the accidents down by alot, but i guess they wouldn't make enough money outa it COKS, all of them.

i disagree, a full on first time test......theory and all

why do anything less? to do so would seem pointlees and devalue to purpose of improving driving standard....

It's no different to going to night school 10 years after doing your GCSE's and retaking them, but an easier test this time, seems a waste of time

Currently as a driver it is MY responsibility to keep myself up to date on the changes in driving law, like hell do it, and i would imagine there are many like me, so the full on malarkey will ensure i have

I think a lot of people would be surprised how hard the test can be...

I for one would have to try hard if I had to meet the standards (and I took my test 3 years ago).

Its the silly little things like driving with only one hand on the wheel, or using palm of your hand on the wheel when turning round etc.

Plus how would you do a retest? I passed in a manual, and now drive an auto, so would that mean that if I did a retest in my own car I could only drive autos... Think it would open up a big can of worms tbh!

Just a boy.I took mine 44yrs ago,how would it be for us old fogies ::)We had to do hand signals as well

I disagree, not about it making you a better driver, but as a whole, drivers gain from experience & not from taking a re-test. As i said it should be classed on your ability to drive.
