Oil Cooler - Meriva
« on: 04 January 2009, 23:34:19 »

Non Omega based tech question about my wife's ill fated Meriva.

I've had mayo problems for 2 years and it's been in and out of Vx during that time but still buggered.

4 weeks ago I took of the rocker cover and cleaned out all the sludge, pipes. hoses, breathers, throttle body and just checked it today and it's full again.

Dip stick is clear and it's not used any coolant to speak of.

I'm gonna trade the thing in but just wondered what you think may be the cause.

HGF, Oil Cooler (if it has one on a 1.4) or something else and what risks do I pose by driving it for another week?

I was, but the deal moved on before I did  :P

I can now get a 1.6 Meriva Design, Black, 7k miles for £7k.

If it is HG will it go bang?

How much are you hoping to raise when you trade yours in?

Won't go bang, check carefully it doesn't overheat etc.

I've been offered between £2500 and £3100 unseen over the phone today. I paid £6500 for it 30k and 3 years ago so not too bad in the current market.

Car doesn't overheat, but it does run 20 miles up and down the M6 with my daughter inside on her way to nursery, hence the caution.

Vx have twice denied HG problems and have simply changed the rocker cover gasket, treated it to an engine flush and filled it with fully synth at last visit (before warranty expired)

I also suspect head gasket....warranty is not an issue as the fault was raised long before the warranty expired and no succesful fix has been carried out!

Wont be oil cooler as

1) There isnt one

2) Oil pressure is much higher than coolant pressure when running so you would get oil in the coolant

I would suggest you get in touch with Vx Customer Care, contact details on the Vx Web Site.

They sorted out my Omega when the warranty expired.

Sound advice guys and I did wonder about the Vx warranty but I'm wary of a fix as it's been like this since I bought it 6m old.

I never bothered to check at the time - as the warranty allowed complacency and I bought it unseen from Sheffield.

We shook hands on a deal today for a black 1.6 Design, 2008 08, cruise, sunroof, rear electric windows and an arm rest! Would you believe the alloys are now wheel trims :o Fantastic finish though and easy to replace if she kerbs them like the previous owner.

Sticker price £7995.  Bought for a swap of 2005 05, 1.4 Design with wonky HG and £4200.

Benefits are that it's local, main dealer, will come with 1st service stamped, full valet (not that it needs it) and it even has a set of head phones still in the box for the kids + 2 new wheel trims and they'll transfer the cherished plate over.

Finally sent the wife to say ok but also wanted a full set of mud flaps.  Salesman wobbled and came back with "we'll meet you 50/50, we'll provide the mats if you pay for fitting"

That's fine says she, chuck 'em in the boot and my husband will fit them.  Another £35 saved  :)

For once I don't feel like I've been fleeced......although I did tell them I only came in to look at the new Saab 93.  Which was true....but I'll keep my barge for a bit longer now  ;)

Glad you got what you wanted.  :y

Have to say though £4.2k + the old car?  ::)

Omegas may cost a little more to run in terms of fuel and tyres, but you could get a very nice facelift for 1.5k.

It would take a very long time to use up the 2.7k in extra fuel and service costs.

The Facelift won't depreciate much more, and would be just as practical!

A valid point Tunnie, that's why I'm keeping mine.

Another website offered £2500 trade in so against the new one it would have been £5500.

If this one works we'll have a race to see which one gets broken first  ;)

Btw if its the Mrs thats the problem just keep plugging away. Thats what we did with mother tunnie, she was unsure for ages.

Now she has her 3.0 Elite Estate, and the 2 dogs in the back she drives it all the time now and loves it  :)

She can't drive an Omega - too big to park fowards, can't see out the back window to reverse and she's only 5'3 so needs a car with a booster seat to see over the dashboard  :-X
