wheel refurbing - arrrrggghhh!
« on: 28 January 2009, 11:49:37 »

All I can say on my experience so far is:

Sand with very fine grit wet 'n' dry to get the kerb marks out
Fill with Metalik as it does a great job
sand down metalik to a glassy finish
wipe down with white spirit when the metalik has hardened
apply first coat primer
apply second coat primer
apply third coat primer as the first two weren't sprayed enough
leave for 24 hours
curse at primer for going lumpy and still not covering evenly
realise that primer should have been shaken a lot more than it was and heated in a tub of hot water before spraying
sand down wheel to remove excess primer
realise that the sanding was too heavy in places and now down to metal again
re-wipe wheel with white spirit
re-apply coat of primer - evenly
second coat primer
24 hours to dry
apply first coat of silver
apply second coat of silver
apply third coat of silver
curse at silver drying too lumpy and rub down gently this time
apply fourth coat of silver
leave 24 hours to dry
realise spraying paint in a shed is not ideal as dust has settled on paint
curse again and go and buy more 2000 grit paper
sand VERY LIGHTLY
apply first coat lacquer
apply second coat lacquer

realise that this has taken me a week to do and the wheel is still in the shed.

The next wheel is going to be a hell of a lot easier - i'm going to do it in the summer when the air isn't full of moisture and cold, as this is turning into a bleeding nightmare.

 :( :(

When I did my Senator's wheels I 'relocated' a big thrust bearing from work to sit the wheel on. It made it a lot easier to spray the wheel when you could spin it rather than trying to twist your arm/hand round to get the right angle of attack.  :y

thanks guys. good thinking about the thrust bearing to mount the wheel on - i may have to find something similar to do the next one with.

God I hate this weather. If it were hot it would be a lot easier to do!

today:

take wheel out of shed and realise that the lacquer hasn't taken properly as I didn't sand the wheel down smooth before applying
Sand wheel down to smooth finish (GENTLY) with 1500 grit paper
clean with decorators wipe
wipe airborn dirt with paper towel
watch paper towel shred itself on apparently smooth paint
sand down again - not so gently this time
achieve glassy finish - eventually
re-clean with decorators wipe
apply first cost lacquer - light dusting
wait 30 mins
apply second coat lacquer - light dusting
wait 30 mins
realise lacquer hasn't been applied heavily enough
apply third coat lacquer a LOT more heavily
wait 30 mins
realise lacquer coat now looks like it should
Apply 4th, 5th, and 6th coats with 30 min waits in between

Finally be happy enough with the wheel to leave the lacquer to harden overnight and fit tomorrow.  :-X :-X :-X
