Road tax.
« on: 30 January 2009, 22:38:59 »

Beastie not ready yet, 328i Coupe has bags of grunt but won't grip in anything but dry weather even in a straight line in 2nd & is going on ebay soon. So given that we're off to Newark autojumble on Sunday, decided to tax the Cortina which is running sweet as a nut (51000 mls) still mot'd & insured & take her there. Went to DVLA online but only option was to start disc from 1st jan, can't start from 1st feb.
Off to local p.o tomorrow morning armed with relevant docs & cash to buy a hand written disc the old fashioned way. Why can't i do that online? :-?

Its still January today (sat) and so disc will be issued from the first Jan.  You cannot buy a disc in advance if the vehicle is currently untaxed.  Been that way for years, not just since it was available online....    :(

You used to be able to. SWMBO used to work in the LVLO in Pompey, you could pay for it from the following month, but they'd post it to you if the start date was so many days away.

I think Alzheimers is setting in with me. I had to tax mine on line as I couldn't find my insurance policy. Seached everywhere for it, but I did find the proof of NCD from the previous insurer that I was sure I'd passed on. When I phoned my current insurer to ask ...... that's why I couldn't find it, I sent them current policy & not the proof of NCD!  :-[  :-[  :-[  :-[

The Police or  Traffic wardens must therefore be able to check via computer link whether or not the car is taxed regardless of the fact that you havent received the disc yet.

For further info check the DVLA website mate but honestly, you have nothing to worry about.

Did the offence used to be NOT DISPLAYING A VALID TAX as opposed to not acctually having one.

Granted things may have changed

Been covered several times recently...

An offence not to have a disc, seperate offence not to display one.

Covers situation where there is a current disc, but its face down on the floor and TW cannot see it and so issues a ticket.

Taxing online is fine, as far as it goes, but you are still liable for a ticket for failing to display a disc if its 'in the post', Rodders....  :y

Cut out a little circle of white paper & write on it "tax in post" like we used to :D ;D

Not any more, providing you have a receipt from the last day of the month, you have 5 days grace, has recently changed iirc.  Think it was when they let you buy tax from the 5th instead of the 14th, trying to encourage more to do it online I think.
