Learning how to weld
« on: 31 January 2009, 19:07:31 »

I am thinking of getting a welding kit and learning how to so that I can build own trailer for the boat (much cheaper than buying one!)

I have my eyes on a lightweight inverter type (translation from German not sure if it is correct in english) as the chap sa that this would be the easiest to learn.  Is he right?  Anything I sld know?  I am quite handy and I learn quick so I dont see much of a drama.....

oh and its for mild steel

http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/ seems quite useful.
Whatever you do get a self darkening shade (£30/40 off eblag), if you try with the old green glass then use a self darkening you will wonder how you managed as it really makes the job so much easier.
You can see what you are going to arc onto rather than guessing till you actually strike up.

If you are learning to weld I would suggest learning with a MIG, quite easy :y

Don't know exactly where in germany you are .. but most UK Forces bases, even overseas, have a "car club" which usually has someone who knows how and might be willing to teach you .. failing that .. station workshops or a REME regt near-by ?? In the UK I'd suggest an evening class .. most colleges do them and welding is usually on the menu ... no idea if Germany has a similar system ??

Told you before mate you've got to keep management occupied or their minds wander, which inevitably means more work for you. ;D ;D
