I have no doubt at all that some, if not many, speed cameras are not accurate (remember the case just over a year ago when this old boy managed to get his conviction overturned at court by proving the camera faulty) and neither do I think that many are there for safety reasons alone as the revenue generated is imense, however, in all honesty, how many of us if caught by one could genuinely say, no, I was not going over the speed limit? The points around speed only being one aspect of "safe" driving I fully agree with but cameras are only there to deal with the speed you are travelling at. The real debate is how to improve road safety and, yes , travelling too fast for the conditions is a big part of that, but so are other issues like driving without lights/ defective brakes or without due care and attention etc. But these are all factors that can only really be improved and dealt with by having more traffic police on the roads, and that is obviously more expensive than static cameras, so , whilst they continue to rake in the money I dont expect to see them go anytime soon!!
