Gosh I didn't expect to kick up such a fuss!
I agree using your mobile phone distracts you whilst driving. I almost always use my bluetooth earpiece (well i better cos next point is bye bye license), but using a mobile phone does not even compare in the slightest to the idiocy i see on the roads on a weekly basis whilst driving home from work between 2-4 in the morning! I see drink drivers regularily (and report everyone of them using 999), people racing including the one occasion i saw two police t5's racing each other down the m62 at some hideous speed, people driving too fast for the conditions and loosing it aquaplaning! Then theres the idiots that undertake using the hard shoulder at ques at junctions, the idiots that under take 2 rows of cars using the inside lane which is also caused by an idiot using the middle lane when he should be in the inside lane. These are all, in my opinion, worse than what i have done, yet most of them carry much less of a penalty (as an FPN anyway) than what I have received, obviously excluding drink driving, which is quite rightly a ban. I understand I should be punished for what I have done, and i'm not proud of it, i am in fact deeply embarrassed about, I only said that 8 points are a little steep.

You may well be right matey.  To a degree maybe every motorist is guilty of braking the law every time they go out.

Misuse of traffic signs
Eating whislt driving - but if thats the case then smoking is the same.
Improper use of signals
Improper use of the highway code
Incorrect car setup (Mis alaigned beam, no horn, tracking out) all things that are not a problem till you find out they are faulty.  Its wrong to have an empty washer bottle.

I believe there is some law sating it is illegal to drive a car knowing it could break down.
Top Gear - Where shall I start

Audi diesel run, driving into london knowingly the car could come to a holt.
Italan car on a budget, No Brakes, engine gave in
The list goes on.

Then you have summer driving, with one arm out of the window, not all drivers have 2 hands on the wheel.

The list goes on matey, but facts are facts.  You only get done if you get caught.

Had you not have been stopped for using a mobile phone then you would not have got done for no insurance ( I actually sympathise with you on the insurance, but there is a lesson to every single one of use there) But that would have only been a matter of time before an ANPR picked up on it.

We drive cars that are capable of mass destruction even at low speeds. death by neglegence would be a hard thing to live with, especially for the sake of a phone call.  8 points plus the 3 you allready had for ever the reason was leaves you no leeway.  A dodgy tyre can soon take that off you.

On reflection.  The phone rang, they would have left a message. The outcome of that call.  OUCH.

Actually .. having done a tad more research on the Sentencing Guidlines site .... you could be considered lucky ....  :)

Minimum for no insurance (with no other aggravating circumstances) = 6 points + fine, max = 12 months disqualification +fine

Minimum for driving whilst using phone = 3 points + fine

So you "should (?)" have got 9 points + fine .. which would have lead to a ban through "totting up" with your previous 3.....

Magistrates have been "nice" by only giving you 8 ... leaves you one short of a ban .. but still able to drive !!!   :y :y :y :y :y

Just my views .. nowt else .. :)

I think that there are obviously far too many perfect people/drivers here.
I'll stick my head above the parapet .... if we're baning people from using a phone & fining people rediculous fines for eating a butty at the wheel, we should also target the all the half wits on the road who struggle to drive in a stright line with both hands on the wheel. I certainly don't think that talking on a phone - hand held or fixed -  can be compared to drink driving like some so called expert has suggested. I have managed to talk on a phone - both hand held & fixed -loads of times quite safely while behind the wheel.

I can't condone it though now, cos it's no longer legal.
That said AndyB, I was stuck behind a woman on the phone the other day at a junction.  She was at the junction on the phone as I approached.  I assumed she was stuck on the ice, so got out asking if she wanted a push, being the decent citizen I am.  She told me to mind my own business, and she drove off!

She was obviously completely unaware of what was going on around her.  Saying that, she was a typical Milton Keynes chav.

That should be banned as well.

Now most people here know I am not a smoker, but against the smoking ban.

But having a fag whilst driving is no different to someone with an uncontrollable pie-arm stuffing a pastie down his neck?  Possibly worse, as we've all seen drivers who drop ash on there laps server about ;D
