Caravan advice.
« on: 13 February 2009, 21:57:26 »

If towing a small van (under 7 ft wide) would you need gay mirror extensions on your mig (which is pretty wide anyway) or can you do without? Also what is a leisure battery please? I'm guessing it's one you charge up & will last a day or two running lights, fridge etc on 12 volt.
Lastly, sorry Jamie, i know these are high on your gay list but i've had enough of tenting it's just not for me i'm afraid. I see you've had a bit of a rough trot today so if you can leave my posts i'll never mock sat navs again...promise....no really i won't. If not well ho hum but i needed the advice so i'll take my chances!!! :-/

A leisure battery is a deep cycle 12 volt battery, akin to a car battery, but with greater long time charge/recharge capabilities.

Mirrors - Required, if the towing vehicle mirrors are of a lesser track than the trailer width - just like a waggon and box/drag.  If the tractor unit is wider than the trailer - happy days.

To start with... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Anyway... Ruling on mirrors is "a clear view down the side of the trailer." I would advise extensions anyway as they will make the manoeuvring much easier and will prevent any awkward moments with Mr Plod :y :y :y

Leisure batteries are designed to be deep cycled without detriment... i.e. Full charge to empty repeatedly. It's a completely different animal to a standard car battery

Not planning on joining the caravan club as a side of me is'nt keen on them, not spending much, all i need is a bed & kitchen, running cold water will do, i'll buy a whistle kettle for the stove. OOF meets have showers/toilet facilities.
What does a leisure battery run/power, does it charge at home on a trickle charge through a normal charger, where do you get one & how much do they cost?

I think T.B would recommend that you don't run to the expense of mirror extensions and deep cycle batteries just invest in half a gallon of petrol and a match  ::) ;)

The battery runs any 12 volt gubbins you want, generally lights and a fridge.  You can also do without and do the Ye Olde gas lamps/mantles bit but I think the 12volt lamps and mini spots are just the job.

Battery can be charged at home and left to do for the weekend without recharge but, as always, the more thats pluged in, the less time a full charge will last.

You can get charging relays etc fitted so that the battery charges whilst towing and also, a 240 volt hookup when on site and art of that will trickle the battery.  this would need the correct wiring etc however.  not something that i personally am very good with....   :y

ps - beastie only has the wiring for standard towing lights etc, not the aux plug to power battery recharge and fridge, so you would need that doing as well....   ;)

Not the cheapest place about but very good service :y :y :y

Wasn't suggesting C&C club... TBH I haven't joined because I think you need to do approx 18 mights to regain the outlay for membership ::) ::)

Seriously though how would an HGV battery do, if Guy has access to those from work.

I reckon he'd have issues getting it in the space reserved for the battery ::) ::) ::)

Oh... And it may go through the floor... Have you seen the size of them :o :o ;) ;)

Would think the main problem is gassing from the charge/discharge and lack of adequate venting.  Waggon batteries are intended to llive out in the open with no more than a splash cover over the top.  A 'van battery sits in a (virtually) sealed compartment on/in the side of the van and thus gasses can get into the cabin.

Size is possibly also an issue, let alone the deep cycle/recharge bit....  Could be worth a shot, but would be wary of the venting/gas bit.....
