Isn't that Agency staff though?  I'm afraid its quite common for temp staff to not get much notice.  Jue used to get that quite a lot when working as agency staff.  One of the reasons he stopped doing agency work.

the ones being interviewed were working with bmw for 2 yrs.  there is no excuse for what they did. i work for agencies and not many have told me not to come back tomorrow as they know if your good you wont bother working for them again. ita all down to respect in my opinion.

Simple - to stop vandalism of part built cars.

Keeps engines free of sand, sockets out of doors and other cavities.

they're agency staff, and its a common thing, i worked for Sony for 2.5 years and they sacked 100 agrency staff 2 mins before the end of our shift lol we had wondered why they had been working us so hard all day to make extra TVs ::)

At least they are getting paid for next weekend's shift as well (well, those that don't owe the company hours/money).

They are agency, and thats why you use agency rather than FTEs.

Also, it would appear that they go an hours notice, not 5mins - thats the BBC being the BBC again ;)

Media trying to whip up a frenzy out of nothing again. They are agency staff as said. Employed as such because they are flexible.

Besides, it's a German managed company. The headless chickens in charge probably didn't get round to making a decision until 5 minutes before. Remember how well they handled dumping Rover in the sh1t?

BMW guys were poor motivated before. Most of them were working for an agency for years, and if anyone said anything, next day he was out. Not like permanent guys from Union – paid much better for same positions, could argue for anything.  It was unofficial that all these blokes were working for agency just because it’s easier to get rid of them and they have nothing to say about it (Unions never protected them). They have to work extra 15-45 minutes a day which cannot be taken as holiday and cannot be paid – can be only used during shutdown, which happened only once.
It was obvious that they will sack many people and they were aware of thet. It was just a question when...

And good on BMW (jeez, was I sticking up for BMW then?).  Remember Cowley is an ex BL plant, with ex BL staff.  The BL management was too soft on them, which is what caused all the problems in the 70s and 80s.  OK, Cowley wasn't as bad a Longbridge, but the unions there were still a bunch of tossers.

Just about to come on ITV news.  850 workers sacked an hour before end of shift due to sales dropping.

They were NOT sacked FFS. They were agency workers who are no longer reqd, their contract simply came to an end!
