Went out for a run and was messing out with the computer on the car and swapping from Inst to Average MPG
Did a couple of runs betwen Wickersley and Auckley (near robin hood airport) with cruise set at 40, then 55 and then at 60. Cant remeber the figures but saw of the instant mpg fig hovering in to 40+ on the flat and returned 39mpg overall on one of the trips. Mixture of roads with some long uphill bits.
Done some more playing today rarely going above 40mph, but mostly 30 or less. Trip comp returned an everage speed of 12 MPH and 17/18mpg. Again a lot of hill work, traffic and bobbing arround driving from shop to shop etc.
Both days the car was started once and never turned off with a view to get the car battery fully charged.
Now the silly question.
Is there a way to link to the fuel computer with a laptop whether it be a socket on that system or via the diagnostics socket so the the engine can be monitored to find the best rev or speed range for economy. Maybe even recording the outside temp or other systems.
Its more out of interest than anything else and I wouldnt know if there was software to support my idea. But it would be interesting to to create graphs for the rev and speed in each gear for example.
Then compare each gear between a rev range to see if the economy is there during that range for the gears.
Then create a profile to aid the testing that Mark DTM did testing various tyre pressures as an example. Then with the same daily run and driving habbits maybe compare different fuel brands, types/makes of tyres. Runs with air con on, windows or sunroof open. How does economy vary with a trailer, passengers or a tin tent attached.
Just a thought and wondered if it were even at least slightly possible.
