Hows this for a car using a lot of oil back when I was young with 2 youngsters we lived in Indiana, we were about to come back to UK as never really settled there  (6yrs)  I bought an old Dodge Polara v8 from a mate good engine but the cranckcase/drivehshaft had a big oil leak major strip down so gave him $250 for it sold our home & car & then set off for Orlando Florida with the intention of flying from Miami bought 4 galls of oil before leaving crammed in with all out baggage (massive boot) on our 1300mile drive  used it all before we got there LOL ! as it got warmer driving south it dripped out even faster on leaving traffic lights I could see the trail in the mirror ....
Now thats an engine using a lot of oil
got £50 for it in Florida then on plane home !!

LOL US  galls I ended up buying another gall in Miami we went to Disney then Miami stayed in hotel for about 5 nights you could see where i drove in & out  the carpark as parked in similar place all week (oil slick)

I had a Pontiac Parisienne in 1986 and had to go to my Cousins wedding in Blidworth Nttingham. from M1 J31 after topping up with oil.

Took the Clumber park root (32 miles) and got to the wedding just in time   .  Went to the reception. Put half a gallon in and caame back home.

So that equates to a gallon (UK) in 64 miles.   Mind you, the timing chain was slack/worn and had cut through the timing chain cover.

I had a mk2 Consul some years back (1971) ...  burnt a hole in a piston and on the money I was on .. 21 Guineas a week before paying for food & accomodation .. I had no cash to fix it, but I knew I could trade it in and get something on the "never never" using it as a deposit .. if it was OK - which it wasn't .. ....  so I drove it down from Yorkshire to Wiltshire with the blown piston ... stopping at a service station every 40 minutes and buying waste oil which I just filled it with .. then drove on .. complete with a very nice cloud of blue smoke behind me.   I reckon a gallon of waste lasted 40 miles ..

When I got to Wilts I got some tractor gearbox oil of a farmer, filled it up then parked it up in a layby about 1/2 a mile from a place that sold motors. Next day I started it up drove it onto the forecourt with an extremely light throttle, and as it was still cold it was not producing smoke at all.

Had a poke around a neat but cheap Austin 1300 .. when the owner came out to have a chat I offered him the keys to the Consul and suggested he take it for a drive and tell me how much he'd give me for it in PX .. his answer was nah .. he saw me drive it in, it looked reasonable .. he was happy to take it as deposit .... I did the deal, drove the 1300 round to home .. said good bye to my parents and left for Yorkshire PDQ !!

These tales remind me of a Ford Galaxy Sunliner that we had back in the 60s. Had no piston rings to mention & we ran it on paraffin, using all the old sump oil we had collected over the previous year when it went on the annual trip to Perranporth for the summer holiday. Being an automatic it leapt off in a cloud of smoke until it decided to change up, faltered & changed back down again. To start it from cold we would park it at the top of a hill, syphon some petrol in a pub car park the previous night then bump it down the hill with one of us astride the engine pouring neat petrol into the carb. The pink paraffin depensing machines had a short nozzle that would just reach the fuel filler behind the rear number plate when the car was backed up to the pump. Then it was a case of feeding 2 shilling pieces (florins) in until it was full.

I ran a Wolseley 18/85S for a couple of years and decided to chop it in for an ex Swan National Hire Car - a mark2 Ford Escort that was only 6 months old.  Had been into the garage a couple of times to view, do the sums for part ex etc, and agreed a day to uplift and swap.

Was driving along to the dealer when, about two miles from the garage, there was an almighty bang from below the bonnet and a massive plume of thick blue reek from the rear.  it was like a WW2 destroyer laying a smoke screen....

Jings, says I...  better think quick....

Kept driving and switched the engine off a few hundred yards from the garage and coasted the rest of the (downhill) way in, leaving the smoke well distant.  

Parked up, done the deed, swapped keys and drove off in the new Escort....  Turned out to be one of the best cars I have owned.....

Never did hear any more of the Wolsely but suspect it went to the scrappers!
