some car manufacturers do print and arrow to denote what side of the car the cap/flap is on, i believe ford do this on the fiesta and escort/focus....

OMG I've had a Fiesta as a company car for two years now and done over 115,000miles in it and I only noticed the arrow after reading this!!! :-[

down to the maker, i would think unlikely down to cost, why have two dash part numbers when one will fit all? Only usefull on hire cars, or where regular users are not familiar with the vehicle. I know which side mine is, so dont care. :-)
