Halifax % Rates
« on: 14 March 2009, 11:23:46 »

I have 2 cards with the Halifax.  1 for my Deposit Cheques Account where the saving's interest is normally crap.  Then an instant savings account that up untill the credit crunch was OK but not as good as others.

To my Horror today I have just checked the % rates and was happy that the Cheque account was accually paying .25%

But then found out my savings account has dropped to a mere .16%  and that neither account has informed me of any rate changes.

Allthough Yorkshire Building Society are in the same boat they are still paying 2.75%

Banks and Building societies are crooks...................what more can I say.......I have just been told that my BS ........................is not passing on the last 0.5% interest rate reduction.....Bank of England rate 0.5%.......my mortgage 3.49%....variable

They are charging 3% .....over base rate........it used to be that they charged about 0.25% ......over base rate.

Still.............as long as I'am helping them to make large profits again ......then I'am happy(NOT) :-/ :-/ :-/ :y

The danger is that the more banks struggle to bring interest rates down in line with base rates, the more they will seek ways to improve their income. ::)

In other words "free banking" is now at risk, so watch out for escalating bank charges.  After all said and done they are a business, not  a charity (despite them acting like it recently!! ::) ::) ::)), and they will be obtaining their pound of flesh from you and me, the poor! >:( >:(

Indeed one of my current accounts went over drawn by 7p, and Abbey tried to charge me £60 for the privilege.  That soon changed when I threatened to close my account and take my business to the other banks I already deal with!  Robbing tinkers!! >:( >:( >:( >:(

On the 2 cards one has paper work deliered, the other is email based.  No info on rate changes from either.

Had a look arround the interest rates on the site last night and I reckon they a swapping the rates from one type of account to annother.  I also think this is a method of getting people to sign up for new accounts which they then use to report on "New Accounts Opened in 2009" in thier litature.

I have been with the Halifax now for 35 years.  My cheque account has a £250 O/D Limit.  So I may well leave it on a zero balance and the most the interest charge is per month is .50p so I reckon it costs them more to keep it open.

Totally the wrong way to look at it, but stuff em.  and the savings are getting moved next week.
