Mobile Phone - Internet Connection Deals
« on: 15 March 2009, 18:23:45 »

Young Lad (25 years of age)- Single Father of 2 has asked if I can help.

He has the chance to buty a cheap laptop and printer, but wants to put it on the internet to keep in touch with his mates.

He has a PAYG mobile with Vodaphone sim card that gives him free weekend landline calls if he puts £5 a week on and uses it by Friday Midnight.

What deals are available via Mobile Phone that he can get so he can go on the net with his Laptop.

I am totally naive in this department but would appreciate any help as I know many of you use these services.

TIA.   :y

not sure if they do them any more but i'm sure it was vodafone that did a deal on the dongle
you pay a one off fee of £99 and you get unlimeted access to the net for downloads surfing etc etc

have a check with your local vodafone dealer :y

He lives in a Counel Flat so not sure if there is any access.

If these deals are costing £25+ then does ths include phone calls on the phone as well or is it just for Net Access?

He pays £20 a month at £5 weekly just to keep in touch and mainly to get free access to landline calls as his Grandad hasnt got too long left because he has Cancer.  So if that is an additional cost then he cant afford it.   :-/

Nothing to do with a phone, its a laptop contract, i think what NickV6 says is best, buy a dongle for £99 which will last a year, probably cheapest way to do it, but downloads will be limited :-/

Edit :- im sure you can buy these monthly now from £10 iirc

Obviosly depends on what your using the dongle for...if its normal day too day surfing then 3 gig is plenty.

I use mine 12 hours a day at least 20 days a month and use just over 1.5gig and that includes playing online poker.

Agreed, and that sounds like what he is looking to use it for ;)

It does...and if it is then any of the big three would be ideal, just check coverage in his area first.

Ten pound a month would give 1 gig or 15 3 gig i believe...and he could use skype too save even more on phone calls. :y

All his mates are on Facebook and as he is tied with 2 young children he doesnt go out much (he doesnt mind)  So it's a way of commumicating and something to do.  Skype would be a bonus.  Downloading other than set up programs initially shouldnt be an issue.

Plus I think the online games within facebook for example may be of interest to keep the kids happy.

Sounds like a dongle would be his best option then...pay as you go sounds best bet.

T-Mobile dongle are also good value for money and they also do a pay- as you deal for unlimited internet access for like £1 a day or something..

If he has a suitable phone he can connect that to his laptop and use it as a modem. HTH

Mobile Broadband i use Three/Vodafone UK

My work have given me a Vodafone 3G Turbo Sim That only works when the dongle is bunged out of the window

Vodafone gives me 500kbps HSDPA 2 Bar Signal

Three works over HSDPA in the house i get around 1.7mbps 4 Bar Signal

Ping is terrible & the mobile phone operators use PANTS DNS so the web seems a little slow i have redirected my'n to OPENDNS makes a vast improvement

i got a 3 PAYG with 12GB and have abused it for one month nearly and used 3gb playing COD 5/4 every night for 5 hours and surfing

i would personally go for the 3 Network they have the best coverage and the most reliable speed i consistently get atleast 1mb 3 are also in the slow process of upgrading there network to 14.4mbps although 8mb is problably what the customer will end up with

3 Also have the best deal £15 for 5gb of data!!! limited offer atm think its supposed to be 3gb for £15

the Huawi E169G / E220 are the best modems
