« on: 15 March 2009, 22:06:52 »

Hi everyone, just thought i'd share my news.
After 7 years being addicted to Codeine painkillers, started due to eye pain associated with M.S. i have had my first clean week of no prescription drugs what-so-ever.From 20 30mg tabs a day to zero, zerozero!!!!!!!.I can actually function and feel human again, now if i just get over the insomnia things will be great.
As a cautionary tale, unfortunately, mine is an all too common occurrence nowadays and is not taken seriously enough by medical practice. One GP said to me just stop taking them, like i hadn't tried.
Codeine is now being considered as a cheaper alternative to Methadone for Heroine addicts, thats how strong it is and just telling someone to quit, when you have facilitated there addiction is just plain ignorant.Anyhow that's it and i'm clear now and will be very, very cautious on any prescription drugs, whatever they may be for. :y :)

Extra:-Codeine is the same family as Heroine and Morphine and withdrawal from it is the same and just as mentally disturbing in that it takes over your whole life until you get that hit.Shame, fear, self loathing, degrading, thats how i felt.
My wife and daughter think i've been swapped with a look-a-like because i'm such a different person.

Not being one to take any medication for anything, I have no idea what you are even talking about, let alone any idea what it must have been like.

But if it is like an addiction, good on you, and I hope you're able to keep with it.

(actually, I am slightly familiar with it, as a relative was in a similar situation, though not sure what drugs it was)

Hmm -- I have to take the stuff regularly --- but, as I dislike taking pills and avoid it if at all possible, I tend to just suffer (not always in silence!!). Only resorting to the pills when things get too bad --- in any case if taken every day you get accustomed to them and have to increase the dose to make them effective .........

Well done FBF -- long may it continue  :y

Thanks,be careful and if you can cope with pain mostly then use very sparingly if you can.

Good luck, always best if you can manage without the pills, i sometimes wonder what damage you can do if the pain is masked too much. I have to take a ranged of different medication at times, including some heavy painkillers....... :'(

Thanx for replies,my GP said to me the other day that he was reading an article in the lancet(or similar) and it said that in 20 years time people will look on the prescription of tablets like codeine like we look back on how people thought the earth was flat, unbelievable now but oh so common back in the day.
6 months ago couldn't get out of the house, last week finished emergency floor job at midnight and did a 12 hour day today.FREE AT LAST!!!!!!

Very well done, fatboyfat.

A locum doctor put me on those things last year before I realised what
they were and binned them after two days. They were marketed
under the name of 'Co-codamol'. She had put me on the max dose
and on the second day I felt like I was walking around on fluffy white
clouds with the gait of a 'Thunderbirds' puppet.

This didn't feel right to me, so I had a read up on the internet and was
horrified on what I read concerning the thousands and thousands
of addicts these pills created. So I stopped them before they got
hooks into me and luckily saw my own doctor when I returned to
the health centre.
He correctly diagnosed me with Temporal Arterial Vasculitus and put
me on steroids.

I was getting really violent stabbing pains in my head and severe
visual disturbances. It felt like someone was sticking a skewer
in my head and twisting it. You literally jerked your head away
from it as if trying to avoid being stabbed. The problem is that it
can destroy the small veins behind your eyes and leave you
permanently blind, which was what nearly happened to me.

I'm still on the steroids, 10 months later, trying to reduce the dose
down to a level that will control the condition and minimise the
effects of the steroids. The steroids have side effects, but I'd
rather cope with those than get hooked on codeine.

I was only on the codeine for two days but could feel the effects
even then, so god knows what they did to you after the length of
time you were on them. I can appreciate what you have accomplished,
so you should be proud of yourself.

If anyone on here gets offered these drugs, tell them to stick 'em
where the sun doesn't shine and demand an alternative.

I was on some silly strength pain killers afer my fall - I had vicious mood swings and was really unbearable.

I think it was a month before I was able to drop to Ibuprofen.

But I cold turkeyed them no issue, paracetamol/ibuprofen mix was not as effective but kept pain away, stopped these when my hands went numb.

However the back pain is more manageable now, just got to lose some more weight

Totally agree with Grumpy, avoid those things like the plague.
originally went on them with Gabapentin,an anti epileptic drug that dulls the nerves. At the time the last optoin to stop what was unbearable eye pain was an Intra Cervical summat-or-other,steroids injected straight into spine at base of neck, possibly resulting in permanent paralysis so i chose the drug treatment but maybe should have risked that instead,if i had known what was to come.

Maybe we should not expect Drs to do things in our best interest all the time and i am now of the opinion that perhaps we make ourselves ill by our lifestyles and i bet 70-80% of drug treatments could be avoided if people were more self-aware and more clued up on just what these prescription toxins will do to you.If you know anyone on these who is wanting to stop or going through withdrawal from them feel free to PM me and i can give an understanding and sympathetic ear.
