volvo c70 auto gear box issues
« on: 14 March 2009, 19:02:04 »

snap on reader gives 2nd to 3rd gear solenoid
                         and incorrect shift pattern
flashing arrow and engine light comes on after about half hour of driving, this envolves clonky and slow changes and always misses 3rd, it either takes ages to go in or the car slows so much it goes back down to second again, all other gears do select, drive is slow to engage.

changed atf no change in symptoms, selector switch is 80 quid and easy to get to so i thought i would start there as ive seen posts that it doesnt like sitting for long periods, which it has done. Ratcheting the selector makes the arrow light go away, which means incorrect shift pattern.

see pics below any thoughts? tracks seem ok contacts on other half
have some wear but nothing massive

any thoughts much apreciated

Cheers

Chris :)

Hi Chris.
My Volvo man is in Aus at the moment so no help. But I could ask some lesser types on monday for there thoughts.
I wouldnt expect to much help from the warranty side of things but after last time you already know that.

any more thoughts no this guys. I dont see alot wrong in all honesty. The raised tracks all bell out to various pins and they dont seem that worn down. The metal contacts have some wear, but nothing major. I was considering grinding a face on them to take out any wear groves, there seems to be plenty of tension in the springs to take the shallower depth that will result. But that will mean removing all the chrome finish on them?

On the face of it 78 sobs for a new one looks like a bit of a waiste of money.

My Dad is going to be really happy to know that. ;D

Had Espace, gearbox went bang (amongst other things, of course), chopped it in for a V70. ::)

knowing nothing about these gearboxs at all,it just strikes me that if the scanner is complaining about the 2-3 solenoid  why don't you just change it ?.the incorrect gear pattern is probably  the same thing  ie fubared solenoid.

Its an Aisin warmer box, dont know exactly which one at this stage.

Looking at selector switch as "ratcheting" the selector gear lever back and forth turns off the flashing low gear indicator arrow, which comes on just before limp mode and the engine light comes no. See here,http://volvoforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=985
The selector switch is £78. A solenoid is £150. Both from volvo.

The ECU is likely to be directly driving the solenoid (based on inputs from the selector, of course, but it won't be in the circuit to the solenoid) so Sassanach makes a valid point. For a solenoid fault code to have arisen, it's unlikely to be anything other than the solenoid or its' connection to the ECU.

I'd get an ohmmeter out and buzz out the circuit before getting a new solenoid though.

changed the selector switch this evening, as this http://volvospeed.com/Repair/pnpswitch.htm
It now selects better smoother and quicker, but the box was cold, didnt get much heat in it, will give it ar run in the morning.
3rd is still not engaging as it should.
So sounds like 2 issues and the solenoid issue still remains, no suprise there by the sound of it.

Codes where
1618 manufacturer specific.
0785 2nd to 3rd gear shift solenoid
Codes are accurate from a snap on reader before the switch was changed, not quite so sure on the descriptions. Volvo diagnostic would give more info no doubt, but we may as well give them the car as payment by the time theyve finished.

Sassanach has given me some homework, he needs to know if its 4 or 5 speed box, (er, both at the moment?) fairly sure its supposed to be a 5 speed but will ring volvo in the morning and see what they say and get the codes cleared again.

Thanks for input so far, much appreciated :-)

Shows how shite the snap-on reader is then if it does not incldue the manufacturer specific codes.

Of course, what we dont know is the detail behind the codes, we also dont know how the gearbox arrives at the decision that the solenoid is an issue.

It may simply be activating the solenoid and not seeing the output speed change with respect to input revs. It may be looking at the resistance (un-likely) or monitoring the solenoid wires for open circuit volts etc (possible)

Now, the Renault boxes (if one and the same) have big issues with the valve blocks.....that and to many plastic internals!

So, without the real code detail and the unknow code have any meaning, its a bit to much guess work.
