Driver with most race wins to become 2009 Champion
« on: 18 March 2009, 07:38:28 »

What do you think about this? It sounds totally ilogical to me

Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has approved a change to the points systems for this year’s drivers’ championship, which will see the title awarded to the driver with the most race wins. The rest of the standings, from second to last place, will be decided by the current points system.

If two or more drivers finish the season with the same number of wins, the title will be awarded to the driver with the most points, the allocation of points being based on the existing 10, 8, 6 etc. structure. The constructors’ championship is unaffected.

Eg, So If lewis or any other driver finishes 2nd in every race and say massa DNF's all but 2 races and no other drivers have won more than one race!! Massa is champion!!

What a load of BS!!

Yep there was nothing wrong with the rules, Its just silly as far as I'm concerned. I rekon its Ferrari, crying to FIA because Massa won more races than Lewis!!

What ever Ferrari wants Ferrari gets!! Boils my blood!!!

it says nothing for consistency, so if Massa wins 5 races, but failes to finish in all the rest, but Lewis comes 2nd in every race all year, that does not count? Pah.

they need to scrap everything related to F1 and start again!

Oh come on please. Its probably the best thing they have done.

Forget the 'Hamilton Factor' for a second, and think with your heads. Christ, we may even (SHOCK, HORROR) get some of these gay prats to attempt an overtake!

Don't agree really. Even though I agree F1 is not as exciting as it could be (BTCC over F1 any day) but just don't agree with their decision. Like saying in snooker who ever pots the most balls wins!! It just wouldn't work or be fair!!

A good idea.....................we want to see racing .......overtaking......audacious daring- do.......not come in fifth or sixth because it will give them enough points.
It is possible to win the world championship.....................by being on the podium regularly .......but winning few races. :y :y :y

They could just have upped the points for a win a notch or two to fine tune the system (a bit like in football wen they made it 3 points for a win)

Someone on the breakfast telly made a good point.  If one driver dominates for the first half of the season and wins a load of races, the championship could be over by the half way point - so there would be none of the excitement we have had at the close of the last couple of seasons.

Why the assumption in this thread that it favours Ferrari - its not retrospective?

Tunnie.
Are you suggesting that you should become world champion, just through consistency, but by not winning a SINGLE race.
how dreary is that. ;D ;D ;D :-* :-* :-* :-*

Ignoring the agy boys amongst us for a mo, who here actually wants to sit and watch every race - esp boring races like every single F1 race for the past few years?

They are GP races, and the point of a race is to finish as best you possibly can.  That means not sitting back and thinking that 3rd/4th/5th or even 8th place will do.

To generate any level of excitement back into a now dull sport, the organisers have now realised at last that they have to make people RACE.

I will now probably watch the first race of the season in the hope of seeing a bit of wheel-to-wheel racing, and these drivers showing some element of skill - if they have any.  I know the drivers will complain its dangerous, but they gay pillocks should realise that is what they are paid for.  There are far more dangerous jobs in this world that pay a pittence.

These new rules should prove good for the sport, as currently the result is pretty much set in qualifying, with the odd overtake during pit-stops (like that is exciting).

You do have a point to a certain extent but do you really think that it will make them race harder? (With the exception of the very end of the season maybe depending on standings) I think they all race to win! All teams all drivers are in F1 for that reason but the thing that stops most teams is money! more money more wins! it shouldn't be like that but it is in F1. Drivers that don't win or come 6th 7th 8th + can be driving just as hard but if the car aint good enough then its not gonna happen.

I know there is allot more to it that that but I stick to my guns and say that a driver who may have finished 2nd 3rd etc most of the season deserves to be champion more than a driver that may have drove crap most of the year and then pulled off 2 wins. Its not likely to happen that way but with these rules it is possible.

I disagree - no driver treats a race as its own entity.  Each driver races drives to guarantee as many points as possible for that race, and that means taking as few risks as possible.

Essentially forcing the drivers to race properly will make for more exciting racing, particularly after the last set of pitstops.

And on the subject of pitstops, refuelling should be banned as well.  F1 was again more exciting before they reallowed fuel stops, as drivers didn't wait for pitstops before attempting to pass.  Currently though, pitstops provide the only overtaking opportunity (and thus any excitement), so probably have to stay for a while, which is a shame, as I want the excitement to be on the track.

Agreed..................especially as they have very PC speed limits in the pit lane.
Much more fun when they used to come flying into the pits at maximum speed................sending the tyre boys flying in all different directions. ::) ::) :y
