if i had the money to buy a mid engined 4.9v8 bora, i'd probably buy an Evo instead!

I cant imagine the bora's being that difficult to maintain if driven kindly and looked after, any car can fall apart if mistreated, VW aren't a brand that have a worrying reputation!

the bora I have isnt yet registered in my name and i've applied for a sorn at the same time as its come to me without tax, and i'm not transferring my insurance over til my corsa sells, so i have to retain the plate for the time being, besides, its only £25 extra to retain

Company i worked for had a car policey everyone either had a 1.8 Passat or a 1.6 Bora.

I had the Bora and it was shit, most uncomfortable vehicle i have ever had the displeasure to drive.

Was working in Cardiff and HAD to stop atleast once during the 200 miles as i was in so much pain due to the crap driving position, did it for a while in a Transit and a Mondeo and never had to stop in either of those.

Cambelts have the same tensioner problems that Vauxhall suffer from, make sure its been done (50k iirc), the one i had basically fell apart as it was being removed, couple more miles and it would be fubar

Also beware of the coil packs, they fail, most of the company ones had one go at a time, i had 3 go at the same time and they melted to the point of nearly catching fire. VW new about the problem but only replaced them if they failed!!

It was a dodgey batch on the V-02 plate cars (mine was a 51 plate).

But if you like it then doesn't really matter what i think  ;D

No, it matters, its good to have insight on the cons as well as the pros, for the sake of preventative maintainence! :y

same with any car bought second hand really, you're basically on thin ice until you get alot of stuff done yourself
